New to Texas CHL ??

Post by Doubletap »

I just moved to Texas from Colorado. I now have a permanent Texas address. My truck is registered in Texas but, I don't have my Texas drivers lisc. yet because they want to see my ORIGINAL birth certificate and I'm having my daughter get it out of my storage room in Colorado and mailing it to me. I have a Colorado CHL. Do I have to get a Texas CHL? Texas does recognize Colorado CHL's but, does it have to be the same state as my Reg and drivers lisc. ? In other words do I have to get a Texas CHL now that I am a Texas resident?

It depends whether your Colorado license will remain valid, or if Colorado will revoke it when you are no longer a resident. If CO still considers it a valid license, then it is legal here.

It is still a good idea to get the Texas CHL after you get the Texas Drivers license for two reasons. First, to go through the training to understand Texas law on justifiable force and criminal protection zones. Second, it makes for a cleaner situation if you ever have a law enforcement encounter and you have address-matching Texas DL and CHL.

I take it you've been here 6 months? If not, then save your money cause they will kick your app and keep your $140.00 and you'll have to reapply and pay again. The 6 month issue is the first thing listed on the eligibility section. By then you should have your Texas DL.

There is no longer a six month wait. As long as a person moves here "with intent to establish residency" (GC §411.173), they are eligible from the first day.

I don't think that's right. Do you know someone that happened to?

No longer a 6-month waiting period.

However, if your current driver's license is from CO you can get a non-resident TX CHL now! (Just means the CHL has an out-of-state address.) Then when you get your TX DL, a simple change of address for the CHL makes it a resident TX license.

Well as Paul Harvey said, "And that's the rest of the story."

Thanks for the correction.

If I remember correctly...(and I've slept a few times in the intervening 4 years) CO wants it back after a certain period of time) my husband said it was after "you're not a resident"; we'd bought a house here, and left our rental up in CO, so it was pretty obvious, so we mailed them back and scheduled our classes here as quickly as we could our $ together.

A Texas CHL will also allow you to keep your gun on you or secured in your vehicle within those pesky gun free zones around schools when picking up or dropping off your kid(s). Just don't go in the school!
