Remington 700 PSS or AR-10
I am looking for a .308 rilfe that is good for all around medium to longer distance shooting that is both reliable and American made. The other conditons are that there must be a plethora of parts available as I am not planning on parting with this rifle for a long time. Between these two fine rifles what do you think? No debates on cartrdige effectiveness please.

Depends on what you want the rifle for. What kind of "shooting" do you anticipate doing?
The AR-10 comes in quite a few configurations.
The Remington offers you options as well, depending upon your primary needs, you might want to look at the PSS and the VS to compare stocks for your purposes. Other than the stock....they are virtually the same rifle, except the Varmint Synthetic is usually a $100.00 cheaper.
Either way, you'll have a fine rifle in an excellent cartridge.

Since you mentioned the Rem PSS and medium to long range shooting, I'm assuming you are leaning toward more of a precision rifle than general blaster.
There will be people who disagree but based on personal experience I will tell you that an AR10 can be setup to deliver accuracy that is on par with the PSS. In the extreme, the PSS can probably edge out the AR10. Having said that, both rifles can be setup to deliver MOA accuracy out to 1000yds.
It's a draw on parts availability. Both are popular platforms and both have a great deal of aftermarket support. I will say that you are more likely to find things you can bolt on to the AR10 yourself than might be the case with any bolt-gun.
In terms of reliability, I lean toward giving the nod to the PSS only because my experience with AR10's has been a mixed bag. The AR10's that I've seen run, run well and are very reliable. Most problems I've seen with AR10's were magazine related. The AR10 otherwise is a good rifle and has the same basic pitfalls of the AR15...It needs to be kept clean and properly lubricated. That's true of all guns but the Stoner system seems particularly sensitive when compared to other "gas guns." Don't take this as a clear cut dig on the AR10, just be aware of it because the rifle really does have a lot going for it.
The only real solution is to own both. Sometimes you'll feel like a bolt-gun, sometimes you won't. I personally am a big fan of gas-guns and I've been eyeing the new LAR10 that Rock River Arms is supposed to release. It will use FAL magazines which is great for me since I've already got a good supply of them and they are cheaper than AR10/M14 magazines.

When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

Of the two, I would probably choose the AR-10, but my first choice would be the Springfield Armory M1A.
In my opinion, the M-14, and as a civilian semi-auto clone, the M1A, was the best all around or combat rifle ever made.
As you can see, I prefer the semi-auto to the bolt, and I think action type may be important in your decision also. Which type do you prefer?

OK,
Thanks for all of the advice. I didn't get as much feedback as I had hoped for but I made a decision anyway. I have decided to purchase the AR-10T w/ 24" barrell first. I wanted to purchase the AR's (just picked up a BM M4 A3 patrolman) first just in case the evil ban is renewed.
I got a great deal on an AR-10T from a company out of state that I would highly recommend. PM me if you are looking for a new one at a great price. Mine is shipping to me tomorrow.
I will order the 700 PSS later as I don't expect the ban to stretch to include these.
