mounting scope

I mounted my scope and didnt really pay attention to much detail and then took it to the range to center it in.

Ive been reading and the real way is to make sure the cross hairs in the scope are centered; and then adjust the rear mount left or right until its aligned vertically with a target on the wall sighted through the bore.does anyone really do this?

to make it more complicated how do you center the cross hairs to the scope itself once you have moved the adjustment from factory settings?

find the travel on your scope's windage from the manual, then take it to one extreme CW/CCW and come half of the allowable windage adjustment back. That should bring you back to the factory zero on the scope. Next, set up your bottom ring halves and bore sight it by eye. You can adjust your base windage until the crosshairs are centered on the POA you get while looking down the barrel. Make sure you pivot the front base while adjusting the windage so that your scope rests securely in both rings and is not being torqued by either ring. Tighten down your base windage adjustment screws and apply the temporary loctite if desired. Next you attach the other ring halves, tightening down the screws evenly, while ensuring proper eye-relief and levelness of your reticule. Though don't forget to lap those rings before hand, brake clean the mounting surfaces (inside of rings, outside of scope), and use a feeler gauge between the turret housing and the receiver/rail to get the crosshairs plumb.
