Moving to SC then PA

Post by texanron »

I'll be relocating to the Columbia, SC area at the end of this month or in early May for an introduction period of 6 weeks with a new employer. After that I'll be relocated on a permanent basis to Lancaster, PA. I know I'm good on carrying in SC for those 6 weeks with my Texas CHL since I will not be a permanent resident of SC.

Once I get to PA and have a permanent residence I plan on submitting a change of address to DPS for my Texas CHL. I want to keep my Texas CHL on a "nonresident" basis. Is there anything else I need to do?

I do plan on obtaining a PA permit as well.

Sounds like you have your ducks in a row. In Pennsylvania, persons 18 years of age and older whom are not prohibited by law from owning firearms may openly carry a handgun in plain sight with no license except in vehicles (you can open carry in a Cecile if you have a CHL from any states they honor), cities of the first class (Philadelphia), unless you have a CHL from any state they honor, and where prohibited specifically by statute.

So, bottom line, you have more freedoms up there with your license than you do down here in Texas. Just familiarize yourself with both SC and PA laws and you should be good to go.

I thought it varied by county.

You are right, I forgot that it can vary by county.

I paid $20 for mine and am familiar with other people paying $20, but that could vary.

Be careful when you are passing through Maryland or NJ. Don't be "carrying" there. Don't give the law any reason to stop you if you have guns in the car. Also if you have to go to Philadelphia for any reason they have some of their own laws on guns. Lived in Pa for a few years. Had my first carry permit there back in 1967. Enjoy the hills and the variety in the weather.

State law limits the amount a County Sheriff can charge to $20 but some SO's make you get your own Police Check Card (background check verification) and that can cost up to $15 or so, there is debate on whether or not that actually violates the firearms licensing laws or not... I am from PA and I love it, Get ready for a small rural setting with TONS of Amish buggies all over the road. I grew up about 25 minutes east of the County and about 45 minutes east of the City of Lancaster. I get home once or twice a year to visit family and get my OC fill... I love it and hope to get back there someday.

OC'd with little interaction in the western parts of the state but had some no so good interactions with LEO's the farther east towards Philly you go.

Here are some PA specific forums too..

pafoa.org - no 10 y/o daughter rule, alot of curse words

paopencarry.org - same as above but they have a really nice .pdf that summarizes PA laws pretty nicely. It also acts as a good handout for introduction to non-2A personal.

Thanks for the info AFcop! The wife and I are really looking forward to getting settled in up there. I've read a lot of good things about the area and folks there.
I joined the PAFAO.org forum just the other day. I'll take a look at the open carry site you referenced.

The wife and I visited PA this past weekend and found a home in Mt. Joy, PA that we're planning on moving into around the middle of next week.
