Security guard accused in Sharpstown Mall shooting

One security guard shot another during an argument at Sharpstown Mall this afternoon, later turning the gun on himself, police said.
The two security guards were spotted arguing just outside the mall about 3:45 p.m. when one security guard, believed to be an Iraq war veteran, pulled a gun and shot the other guard in the jaw or neck, said officer Keith Lovelace of the Houston Police Department's homicide division. Both men are expected to survive their injuries.
The shooter then retreated to the other side of the mall, where he was approached by an HPD patrol officer responding to reports of the attack, Lovelace said.
The officer noticed the SUV's driver was wearing a uniform, so he "stopped to ask him if he had any information on the suspect," Lovelace said.
But as the HPD officer approached the SUV, "he realized this man was the suspect," Lovelace said. Suddenly, police said, the gunman pulled a weapon and shot himself in the head.
Both men were transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where the victim, identified as Robert T. Davis, is expected to be released tonight. The shooter, whose name was not released late tonight, was listed in critical condition in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
As officers poured over the abandoned SUV this evening, a woman who identified herself as the sister of the alleged shooter visited the scene. She said her brother recently had returned from serving in the Army overseas before taking a job as a security guard at the mall.
A witness who asked not to be identified said he was working at a sunglasses shop near the mall entrance when he heard a commotion just outside Shawn Mart jewelry store. Moments later, a security guard stumbled through the doors clutching a bleeding wound near his neck. He staggered and then collapsed as shoppers and mall employees wept and screamed in panic.
Hours later, the mall was bustling with customers again. Occasionally, a curious bystander stopped and lingered in front of Shawn Mart to stare through the lowered metal security grate where a patch of blood was visible on the gray carpet. A few feet from glass cases full of gold and silver chains, a bloodied white shirt remained bunched on the floor as investigators took pictures and interviewed the store's clerks.
