Remington 870 or Mossberg 500?

When I bought my first gun almost a year ago, I was certain it would be the only one I'd own. I have acquired 5 more since and I have several more on my wish list. I think I'm hooked.

Regarding the used thing, not sure if there is anything shotgun specific other than what you already mentioned. Should be clean and reasonably maintained, action should be smooth and trouble free. I did a quick "what to look for in a used shotgun" google search, but it didn't pull up anything great. Hopefully one of our more shotgun savvy members can help you out with some specifics.

Well the decision has been made. I found this used and could not beat the price or the condition. I have an 18.5" barrel for it too. I think I've got it covered for all activities. One last obstacle is to shoot it and hope it doesn't knock me over or dislocate my shoulder.

I likey it! thats a super clean Mossy! should be able to knock off some clays or doves with it for sure.

Pawn Shops are a good source for shotguns, and they usually have bunches of them. If you have cash and some haggling skills, a good used Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 can be found very reasonable, usually under 200 bucks.

Nice Mossberg you picked up! I picked up a Rem 870 26" VR for $150 drive out at my local pawn shop. It had a couple of dings on the stock. They called me about two months later asking me to come in and correct an error they missed on the 4473 form and I saw a Mossberg with a synthetic stock for 195 when I went in. I got them down to $150 drive out on it also. I'm trading it to my brother for a Rem 1100 20 ga I gave him back in the 1960's.

I was excited. I spent $190 for the Mossberg, extra 18" barrel and FFL transfer fee. The best part is, I didn't spend all of my budget so I have a some money left over to put towards the next one. Maybe a 20 gauge or Ruger 10/22.

...nice gun...great price on the package...a 10/22 with a Ruger brand 25-rd magazine full of CCI Stingers makes one fine defense weapon for the home...

Rem. 870 !

I was at a gun shop standing in front of a wall of mossberg shotguns. Having owned Rem. 870's for a long time with no complaints, I was considering a mossy for a hd shotgun just to give them a try. so I ask the clerk what his opinion, expecting him to say that mossy is the best, blah, blah,blah... Instead he said go with the rem 870 much better gun, the mossy are built cheap and the guide rods on the pump action are so thin a weak they flex outward when the pump action is cycled causing the action to jam so you can't complete the cycle. That was from feedback from several PD's they do business with. I would not have believed it if he didn't have a wall of mossy to try to sell or experienced it at a gun show when checking out a mossy for my self a noticed the flexing guide rods while pumping the action.

Mossy is cheaper for a reason.

Really? thats weird , havent had either of my Mossberg 500 jam ever! Had to send both of my 870 back for issues like a cracked receiver and burrs in the chamber.Glad they were still under warranty.Not made they way they used too.I would go with the Mossy.
