Man shoots at cop, outside ER

Jessie Guyden III told the 37-year-old Lewisville woman whom he kidnapped, raped and returned to work Tuesday afternoon that he would kill himself after killing her, her children and her boyfriend, police records say.

Hours later, police said, the 34-year-old followed the woman and a Lewisville police officer to a Denton hospital and opened fire on the officer. Police said he then led other officers on a chase to Gainesville, where he entered an International House of Pancakes, took a male employee hostage and turned the gun on himself.

Another example of why I always carry. I live in Houston, a long way from Gainesville. However, I make a business trip 5 or 6 times a year that takes me through Gainesville. That IHOP is my regular stop for a meal and a break. Proving once again that you just never know when you will need it.

some co-workers and I have had long conversations about our safety at work. I mean, as a hospital employee, you really can't do much.
I'm a usual person to respond to code Yellows (security code, not that code yellow you find after a patient wets the bed  ), but really I can only stand there and watch.
thankfully, we have a deputy in our ER constantly, and especially on the weekends, who is able to back up our security force (retired guys with no real authority) "just in case."
I obviously don't carry at work (against policy) but, as we all know, situational awareness and "other" options are always open to the general public, as well as employees.
IHOP, on the other hand..... well, you know. ;-)
