I recently took my CHL class with KR Training/Schaefer Training Academy. Tom Schaefer was the instructor. Simply put: it was fantastic. Tom is a great guy, a 24-year retired veteran w/APD. He is very knowledgeable on Texas laws. and made the class a lot of fun.
I highly recommend this training.

I'll 2nd that (pun intended). I took my CHL class a couple of years ago with Tom at his property and private range in Caldwell County (near enough to Austin). He is a great guy, thorough, keeps it interesting. When I was there, the weather was nice so we spent part of the afternoon doing classroom at the picnic table outside near his range.
All inclusive, well done.

I renewed my CHL with Tom Schaefer a couple of years ago. Good class, good instructor, BUT - I had to have my 'prints redone at DPS HQ. (That's the one advantage to living in the Austin area - you can hand-carry your packet in and have them look it over in case something - such as my 'prints - isn't OK.)
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Yeah, I took my class from Tom a couple of weeks ago, and it was a great experience. I second all the compliments above. Since I'm only a week out on submission, I'll have to see about the prints... that's a concern of mine as well. Looking at my copies, I'm a bit concerned about the right thumb on both my DPS and FBI copies. The print is clearly there, but a little bit of darkening towards the top of the right thumb that I'm concerned about. Hopefully it's OK. I gave DPS a call, but they say it takes 2-3 weeks from receipt for it to show up in their system, so no status yet.
