Old Rifle Ammo Question

Post by Don2 »

I have an old Italian 6.5mm Carcano w/bayonet I bought from a friend who needed some money. It had just been through a gun shop and had been reblued and gone through.
Looks nice. ( for an old gun, which I'm not choked up with ) Just bought it to help him....I'm really not into old foreign guns.

Any-Hoo..........I have 2 box's of Norma 6.5 mm, 136 gn and 159gn Carcano ammo.
What i'm asking about is on the primer itself, there is "NP" stamped on it.
One box has it and the other does not?
What the heck does that mean?????
The ammo looks old too...its not new because the brass has kinda tarnished some and the box shows wear.
Is that one of the "Green" bullets?
Don't think my cheapo camera would take a good enough picture? ;-)

Norma was making that ammo back in the 70's and 80's. It was rather expensive. At the time they were the only ones loading it. I can't answer the question about the "NP" marking. It seems to me that all the ammo I had was marked that way but I didn't buy a lot of it. The stuff was more than $20 a box way back then but it was good quality ammo.
By the way, did you get the 6 rnd magazine clips (yes clips) with it? When I traded my carbine version the clips were getting hard to find. When the clip is empty it falls out a hole in the bottom of the magazine (and many times get stepped on). I taped mine shut when hunting with it.
Good luck with it and have fun

Yes, I have 5 "clips" that look pretty new.
That name clip has caused me problems, I used it as a generic term for anything that held bullets ( I knew the difference )...........But I got too much flack over it..!! So now I am politically correct on magazines and clips.... ;-)
( Thats another story )

This should be a Carbine, barrel is 18".

Never fired it yet, how did the one you use to have shoot? Was it accurate?
I wanted to check it out more before shooting it because I heard so many stories about them being rechambered and not done correctly or some other story?????

Another issue is that I do not have the mounting hardware for the bayonet. I think it should have a spring of some sort and some kind of bolt/nut ???
Looked around the internet, but could not find any info or parts.

Thanks for any info.

Mine shot well enough. The rear sight was nothing but a big permanent unmovable V. If I remember correctly the front sight was home made and shortened to get it on target at 100 yards. It's been over 20 years since I traded it so I'm a bit foggy on the fine details. Mine had no provision for a bayonet.
I used it for deer hunting for a few years. For ballistics I'd consider it about equal to 30-30.
If you're unsure about the chamber I'd have a gunsmith spec it out. Have them inspect the bolt and headspace also.

The guy I bought it from had shot it several times, plus he shot it 4 times when he got it back from the gun shop.
( one box of ammo has 4 missing? )

I just don't really like these old rifles much, I think I'm going to bring it to the next gun show and trade for something???
I'd rather have a 870 20 gauge ;-)
I have enough rifles and pistols for my needs at the moment.

Yep, no adjustment on the sights...
I actually bought it to hang up in my shop with the bayonet out, kinda looks good that way.

On well, I was just looking at the ammo yesterday and saw the letters on the primer and was wondering what it was?
Then I got interested in it for a while, now I'm back to leaving it alone.
Thats the way it goes I guess.

Thanks
