Carrying while on business travel???

Post by Laneman »

My employer has begun sending me on out of state business trips. My local office here in Texas has its headquarters in a "Blue State". I am considered on the clock when I step into an airport. If I were to bring my carry weapon on the trip would I be in possession of a firearm while "at work"? Nothing in the employee handbook covers carrying while traveling on company business. My personal view on this is leave it in the car when I am on company business and wear it as usual when I go to dinner at night. Obviously I don't want to lose my job over this but I sure hate being unarmed when out to dinner in another state. I know if I were to ask my company it would be a definite "No"

I've carried in other states on company business. The biggest key is to know our reciprocity status and the laws of the other state. Two good sources are:

Nra-ila.org/gunlaws
Handgunlaw.us

Which state are you traveling to for your job?

Nothing would surprise me. Companies will say they have control over everything, even things they really don't. My company policy states I cannot have my gun in my own car while on their property. Now I know this matters not to your question, other than to say, they can and will say anything goes. I would carry on a business trip same as I would at home. Carry at home, carry on the way, but don't carry while there at the office. Home=hotel, drive=on the way, office=where I work.
Of course, this all assumes that you can carry and also carry where you're going. Some hotels have policies against it, so it gets tricky.
I like to keep this handy... for close encounters.

There are two questions I would ask myself in your shoes.

1. Is it legal to carry in those places?

2. If it's legal but (maybe) against company policy, what's the risk I will get caught?

I think my main concern is that I am considered on the clock when I am in the airport, and their position would be that I am carrying while acting in the capacity of employee. Since Texas is an "at will" state they could fire me without giving any reason. I think the "blue staters" at corporate would fire anyone who carried while on company business. Makes me mad that I am disarmed in the evenings while I'm on my own time.

Most people would rather be gainfully employed than receiving unemployment benefits.

I would rather be receiving unemployment benefits than my family receiving a life insurance check. I think my parents agree but I'm not sure about my sister.

You ask a lot of questions but aren't willing to answer any. Why is that?

You've been a member of this forum for about an hour and have made random posts that IMO don't contribute to the discussion. If you are here next week I might respond to questions that are relavent to the topic. :tiphat:

If you are a young single guy with a highly in demand skill set, then absorb the risks and carry away, being aware of the rules at the airport and in the destination states and cities. If on the other hand you have a spouse, dependent children, mortgage, car payments, etc., then perhaps you should absorb the risk, be mindful of where you go to dinner in the evenings, and settle for a container of pepper spray. Unpleasant, but pragmatic.

I have carried on business travel but have decided it's too much trouble. Note this is my personal opinion and you may feel differently.

Mainly, I don't like to check bags. I've had bags get delayed several times, and the last time I traveled with my firearm my bag was lost by the airline for two days. That's two days where the airline itself had no idea where my suitcase was, and I had no idea where my gun was. That was the last time I checked a bag and, for obvious reasons, the last time I carried my gun on a business trip.
