Need to ship a Gun...PLEASE HELP

Post by TheRising »

Hello friends,

I have found myself in a predicament. My father just purchased a used G23 for me and now he needs to send it to me.

1) UPS is a ridiculous price ($65) and on top of that they will only send to an FFL

2) Fed-Ex is even more ridiculous

3) My father is a Federal agent for the DHS

What are my options, especially because of the 3rd bullet there.....does that help at all??

I just can't believe that this process has to be so consuming. It is really quite outrageous that it has to be this expensive.

Not sure if you're going to get around the price to ship the item...That may be something you'll have to suck up...

All I know is (because I've never shipped a firearm, never needed too,but I have seen these discussions before)...

See if there is an FFL dealer here on this forum in your area, since they'll be the ones you'll have to have it shipped to...

I think you'll catch a break there...

What city are you in or near???

I am in Houston (Clear Lake Area). I have located some FFL's for the actual transfer through GunBroker.com, but I was just wondering about the actual shipping.

Your father can get an FFL to ship the firearm by U.S.P.S. It's much cheaper. I recently paid $35 total.

$65?????

I spent $35 shipping a firearm 2 day air via fed-ex, and it was a 3" Kimber 1911.

Also, being an officer for DHS changes nothing. I have an active Secret clearence - soon to be TS - and both of my parents are DHS as well - and it doesn't change a thing.

Find an FFL with a decent CHL transfer rate(assuming you have a CHL) and they may be able to get cheaper rates since they are a business and ship a lot of stuff.

From, FedEx's website:

"Firearms must be shipped via FedEx Priority Overnight service. FedEx cannot ship or deliver firearms C.O.D. or with a signature release. Upon presenting the package for shipment, the person tendering the shipment to FedEx is required to notify the FedEx employee who accepts the package that the package contains a firearm. The outside of the package must not be marked, labeled or otherwise identify that the package contains a firearm. Firearms shipments cannot be placed in a FedEx Express Drop Box."

Price for me to do this: $75.84

So, either you did this prior to a rates increase and rule change, or you borke their rules....

As for the DHS thing, I just thought that being a Federal Law Enforcement Agent would change some requirements or something....

Thanks Jim. Does the FFL that my Father goes to have to ship to an FFL here in Texas or can he ship directly to me?

I appreciate the help!

Check out the topic thread down the page here that says "FFL"...

You might find some that would do this for a song..."Transfer-wise"...

Like I said the shipping cost is what you'll have to shop for (Or your Dad)...

Its got to be shipped to the FFL dealer...Then you get it...

As Steve said, no matter who ships the pistol or how, it has to be shipped to an FFL in Texas.

Maybe everyone knows this, but I'll mention it for anyone looking up this thread in the future: you can buy or receive a handgun from an FFL or private individual only in the state where you live. That's federal law.

You're welcome.

I wish I would have seen this earlier.
My dad had this problem.
He finally called his own local post office. The price to ship? $5. (Now before you get excited, this was a little Kel-Tec.)

If that doesn't end up working, how far away does you dad live from you? If he isn't too far, it might be worth the gas, then you get a visit as an added bonus.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

One FFL may ship to another FFL via US Mail.

Also, regarding Fedex and UPS rules.

They both have lower cost next day methods that they will accept.

Where the high dollar will get it there by 10 am usually, it costs a lot less to get it there by the end of business the next day.

UPS calls it Next Day Air Saver.

Fedex calls it Standard Overnight.

Well, as much as I would like to see my Father and Mother, they're 1400 miles away in Pittsburgh!!!

He tried telling me he'd bring it with him in June when they come down to visit for the first time, but I secretly suspect he just wants to fire it a million times before he gives it to me!!
