New Job at Airport (Parking Lot Questions)

Post by Reds45ACP »

Hey All. Just got a new job at the airport (commercial airport with TSA/Metal Detectors/etc). I am trying to remember my CHL class but I don't recall. I know I can't carry at work but is it okay for me to leave it in my car? Normally I assume the "Parking Lot Law" would apply but I am not sure since we are talking about an airport. Employee parking is not within a secured area.

Advice/Statutes/Precedence welcome. :)
Hello. My name is Red and I used to carry a .45. Now I carry a 9mm and it's getting easier to admit every day.

You should be fine. Carry is only prohibited in secure areas of the airport.

It might only be a problem if you are using your POV as a part of or a function of your employment, so that the gun is there while you are on duty. That might be an issue with the employer. If you are just parking in the lot like everyone else, walking in and then beginning work, you are very legal.

Don't forget that some airports, such as Dallas Love Field, consider the parking lot to be verboten just because it's an airport.

Do you park within what would be considered as a secure area? Is access to that parking lot controlled with a guard 24/7 and fenced in?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Some people think gun shows on government property don't have to follow government property rules. It looks like the same delusions apply to airports.

As stated the OP parking lot is not a secure area.

I will be working in the secure area of the terminal while my car stays parked in the lot; it isn't part of my job. The lots have limited access and and are patrolled by a security guard.

So, I'm cofused, do the Fed regs state the parking lot is a secured area and not subject to the Texas "Parking Lot" law?

No, the Federal regs are quite clear, but some airports, such as Love Field where we were given a set of rules by the airport stating that firearms were not allowed in cars in the parking lot, consider themselves laws unto themselves. And the state laws are just as clear, but see the previous sentence.

BTW, the parking lot rules at Love were third party, the parking lots were run by a company that contracted with Dallas to run them, so the "rules" for employees parking were drafted by them, and passed by Love Field management to the various employers at the airport, and by those employers, including TSA (who should know better) to the employees.

Okay, what are the Federal laws in regards to the airport parking lots or where can I find them? They may be clear but I have no idea what they say.

Parking lots are not part of the secure area. No metal detectors. No 3oz limit on liquids.

They are clear in that they don't exist.

I do it every night. Fenced? Yes. Security? Yes. 30.06? No.

Love Field is owned by the people of the city of Dallas, and i believe operated by the city.

DFW encompasses several cities and two counties and is operated by the airport board. I believe the board is appointed by the municipalities involved. Don't really know how that works.

As for Austin (aka the weird city), who knows?

Outside the AOA should be fine.

Not only the parking lot, but you can also carry into the unsecured area where you wait for baggage and loved ones. That was my understanding of it. I won't say I have done it, just in case it turns out I am wrong. Anyone???

You're not wrong. I'll say I've done it. I'm 100% sure I was legal.
