Webb Aide Arrested For Taking Gun Into Senate Building
WASHINGTON — U.S. Capitol Police arrested a top aide to Sen. Jim Webb on Monday after he tried to enter a Senate office building carrying a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines.
Phillip Thompson sent a bag through the X-ray machine at Russell Senate Office Building, where Webb's office is located. It detected the weapon and Capitol Police say they determined that Thompson didn't have a license to carry the gun in Washington, D.C. Thompson was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.
"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the senator’s aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the senator. We are still awaiting facts," Webb's Communications Director Jessica Smith said in a statement.
Thompson, a former military reporter based in Virginia, joined the senator's staff after Webb was elected to office in November. He travels frequently with the senator.
Handguns are illegal in Washington, D.C., but nearby Virginia allows residents to carry concealed handguns.
Webb told The Richmond Times Dispatch in December that he considers himself a "strong Second Amendment person" but said he does not carry a gun to work.
"I don't carry personally regularly. I shoot regularly. I like to have the option to carry, which is why I keep the permit," he said. "I value the opportunity to be able to protect myself, depending on situations. But no, I don't walk around with a weapon on me all of the time," he told the newspaper.

I see so many things wrong with this whole story..."an oversight by the senator’s aide" - No kidding!
"I don't carry personally regularly...I like to have the option to carry...to be able to protect myself, depending on situations." - Wow! He must have ESP.
Edited to add: Why in the world would you let everyone know that you have a concealed license - AND ON TOP OF THAT - that you don't carry regularly?

He ran as a Democrat only because he was running against an incumbent Republican.

wasn't talkin' about Webb, I was talkin' about the subject of the arrest, the subject of the news article, and the subject of the thread.Thompson, a former military reporter based in Virginia,
'preciate the info on Webb, though. sounds like he was a B.A. Baracus!!

Did Webb transfer the gun to his aide within the city limits of D.C., or did he personally bring it into D.C. at any point?
Will this be swept under the rug the same way a similar incident was when Ted Kennedy's bodyguard was arrested trying to bring illegal (in D.C.) guns into the Russell Senate Office Building a number of years ago?
And, most importantly, If I or any other member of this forum accidentally forgot a gun we were licensed to carry in our luggage, would the same people who want to go easy on Webb's aide also want to go easy on me?
John Kerry has a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and three purple hearts from his Vietnam service, too. Medals don't make a man a good leader, nor should they exempt him from laws I'm expected to follow.Sen. Webb is a Marine. He has been awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts from combat in Vietnam.
If a law is bad, CHANGE THE LAW . . . don't look the other way or look for excuses to avoid prosecution when it ensnares someone with political connections.

Senator Webb, IIRC, is a former Secretary of the Navy...For what thats worth..."I don't carry personally regularly. I shoot regularly. I like to have the option to carry, which is why I keep the permit," he said. "I value the opportunity to be able to protect myself, depending on situations. But no, I don't walk around with a weapon on me all of the time," he told the newspaper."
