I just saw a flash that at 10 o clock they will be reporting on "the scary new handgun laws".

Dosen't sound like they know who the good Guys are.

But I should wait until I hear the report to make my call on that.

I didn't have my hearing aids on and couldn't catch the names, there wasn't much to it, a LEO states that they are worried about all the untrained people that will running around with guns in their cars and a pro gun person says that folks will be able to defend themselves in their cars as they do in their homes.

The opening statement is what got me going, " Scary new gun laws " is putting the medias own slant on the issue.

To me, it tells me there will be more reasons for criminals to break into vehicles looking for "guns"...

What upsets me the most is that the "legal" concealed handgun carriers that have been issued licenses after going through background checks, training and certification are no longer the only citizens that can legally carry in a conceled capacity. This bill allows anyone to carry concealed in their car and they have not even been made aware of the consequences of using that handgun in their own personal defense. They have not proven that they can even hit the side of the proverbial barn when shooting and just who is it carrying these guns. I really feel for the LEO's. The effect of seeing the CHL and realizing that this person is trained, background checked and has qualified has been lost and they will have to really be on their guard.

It'll definitely make it easier for the main steam media to misreport future shooting incidences...

As to difuse licence holder vs. unlicenced citizen...

Law Enforcement will now have to be ever more cautious when making those traffic stops...Whether we are licenced or not...

Could this new law be a stepping stone (baby step) for additional legistlation??? Pro or Con???

So, you don't really favor the Second Amendment?

I have no problem at all with more people being able to carry without restriction. If we were to adopt another state's model, my first three choices would be: Alaska, Vermont, and New Hampshire (in that order).

Any LEO who isn't already treating every traffic stop as if it could turn bad very quickly, is a fool. By saying they will have to be "ever more cautious" now, you imply that your friends and neighbors who don't happen to have CHLs are likely to start shooting over a speeding ticket.

Did "I" say that??? I most certainly did not...

My comment was intended to illustrate that non-CHL'ers who will now take advantage of this law will not understand the nuances of the other laws regarding self-defence and the use of force and deadly force and the requirement we are subjected to, to notify Law Enforcement Officers, because they do not know that that would probably be a good thing to do at the onset of a traffic stop...Like we are required to do...

So now what we have, are people like us who have gone through the class, trained and been instructed of the law...A great majority of us have a good mindset and foundation on how we should conduct ourselves in public...On the other hand, we have folks who are not versed in those laws and statutes...

I am sure that the folks who would take advantage of this law are of similar qualities...

But there will be some that will figure out that while they may be allowed to carry in a vehicle, some will stretch that out a bit and tuck it away on their person, thus not being licenced to do so...You know some will do this...Either with good intentions, or alterior motives...To me its not much of a stretch to see that attitude develop over a short period of time...

I see this developing as a negative to those of us who are licenced to carry...

Or it could go one of two ways...Either it develops into a push to get us to a Vermont or Alaska system...

Or it could go the other way and get us back to a pre-1995, no carry status...

I know thats just some extreme thought process, but since this has been running around, I have not really seen much to make me think that this was a good bill, now a law...Effective this Thursday...

I support this law. I think the car should be an extension of your home, as it is your property. The traveling laws concerning weapons in TX has long been a legal mess with no certainties.

It does concern me a little that more guns will be stolen, since someone who does not have a CHL must leave their gun in the car when parking somewhere. However I don't think that's going to be a big enough issue to warrant the level of restriction we currently have (i.e. changing nothing).

What makes you think that only folks without a CHL will leave handguns in the car.

I know of several CHL holders that have a "car gun" that always stays in the car.

It may come as a surprise to some that starting next month Texans will be allowed to carry handguns in their cars.

Since 1871, carrying a handgun has been illegal in Texas unless the owner had a permit or could prove they were traveling. This created confusion since traveling was never defined.

Texas lawmakers cleared up the confusion in their last session by defining it as driving a private motor vehicle.

This means starting September 1, anyone can drive around with a handgun in their car without a permit. That is as long as they are at least 21 and meet other criteria like not being a gang member. The gun must also be out of sight.

Some law enforcement officials say they fear the law may lead to more gun violence. "

"Other criteria" ???????? What the hell? Would it be too much for them to actually list the new definition? (I guess it is not a new law, rather a clarification of an old law.)
