Just picked this up at Carter's in Spring this afternoon...
It's a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in 30-06 with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 scope. Will try it out next weekend at the range with my daughter (she's 16). I've ordered some Remington Managed-Recoil ammo, which I think she should be able to handle.

Nice rifle, you might want to think abut puting a limbsaver recoil pad on it, the thing is going to kick like a mule without it..... then again some people enjoy a good thump......
We'll try it with a shoulder pad first to see how it feels, first with the managed-recoil loads to get it sighted, then a few Winchester 180gr Power Max HP, as that's what I intend to hunt with.
My daughter is excited about shooting something other than a pistol (9mm and .22LR); so this will be something quite different for her.

I have Tikka T3 in the same caliber, without the Limbsaver, after 40 rds my shoulder is bruised good. With limbsaver, it feels like an AK to 7.62 Nato rd.
Someone has to buy the new Ruger American and reports back.

I went with my daughter to Carter's this afternoon to sight the rifle and shoot a few rounds.
Carter's did a remarkable job with the scope installation and bore sighting... first shot from 50 yds on a rest was right on the money, but adjusted the scope one click up.
My daughter shot a box of Remington Managed-Recoil (125 gr soft point) and she handle it quite well. She got 18/20 within the 8-ring and two that barely missed the 8-ring; got a few bulls-eyes and a good number within the 9-ring. She decided not to use the shooting pad I got for her, but handled the kick with no issues. She used the rest provided and a few sandbags to rest her elbows.
I shot a box of Remington Core-Lokt (165 gr soft point) and 8 rds of the Managed-Recoil load. With the Core-Lokt, I got all my shots within the 9-ring from 50 yds not using much support. The Managed-Recoil does not have much of a kick... perhaps 50% less than the Core-Lokt.
I love the rifle... it's very accurate and not that heavy. The factory recoil pad seems to be doing a good job, so will leave as is at least for now. The only issue is that it gets quite hot, but no more or less than other similar that I have shot. The action felt really smooth... and had no issues feeding, firing or ejecting.
Overall I am very pleased with it and have no reservations recommending it. Now I just need to try it from 100 yds... practice a few more times to get ready for deer season.

I have heard they give kicking like a mule a whole new meaning. I local gunsmith has one in on consignment because the man bought it for his 12 year old, shot it 3 times and that was all he could take. It is a 270. That didn't work right, maybe I should not post at 4 in the morning
