Looking for foam lining for gun case.

I have one of these to store my pistol in. Wasn't doing anything with it so it seemed like and idea place. Right now I have the pistol in the the factory box it came in, and then stuck inside this firesafe. To access the pistol I have to open the lid and then open the factory box and take it out of the plastic and stuff. I would like to get some foam padding that I can cut the shape of the pistol out of so all I have to do is open the lid and its there. My question's are

1. Is there a certain type that I need to be looking for?
2. Do yall have any suggestions as to where to find it?

i have some foam but you will have to cut it to fit the case and gun. free if you want to pick it up. pm me

I made a transport case for my handguns with foam......I used egg crate style foam from wal-mart. Cheap and it works just fine.

Me too. Have used it for pistol & rifle hard cases. Easy to cut to fit.

Some businesses that sell moving supplies also sell foam like that, either in a roll or by the sheet. If aesthetics isn't important, you can just as easily get some bubble wrap and tape it to the tops and bottoms, on the inside of the case.

EDIT: May I ask where you got that case from, ie., is it commercially available? I have a little one that will be with us soon and am weighing various storage options.

Twin sized matress top from Wal-mart. I have mine fitted into a large rifle case. This was a hurry up product of the 2005 hurricane season.....it works well.

I added a couple of strips in various places throughout the case to fill any gaps.....the handguns are of different thickness which will let the 1911's and such slide around......the strips prevent that and give a good solid result. Good luck.

I'm not sure where my wife got that. She's has had it for awhile and never used it for anything. I'm at work at the moment but I'll ask here when I get home tonight. I can tell you thats its a Brinks firesafe model number 5012. I think I have seen them online when I was looking for a Image of one. I think it was only lie $30 bucks.

Hancock Fabrics or JoAnn's craft/fabric stores both sell foam by the foot in various thicknesses.

Sounds like some good sources of foam, it got me wondering though, is there any materials to avoid? Something that may promote adverse affects to the bluing or scratch surfaces? I work in a place where there is an endless supply of packing foam. It gets recycled or thrown out. I've been afraid to use it for the reasons mentioned above.

It sounds like any foam will be OK, though. any thoughts?

Hope I don't grt this backwards but look for closed cell foam, not open cell foam (like a sponge). It will not hold moisture next to the weapon

You are correct that open cell can absorb water, but closed cell doesn't compress. Closed cell is like the grey/black pipe wrap tubes that have the adhesive strip built in. Most foam that I've seen, other than styrofoam, in cases is open cell. Some times you'll see closed cell used as a thin padding between where the gun touches the formed plastic case. Closed cell would have to be cut just right or the gun would "rattle" around. Open cell you can just place the gun between 2 layers, or cut out a section that is a bit snug and the foam will stretch to accomodate the object.

I'm sure there are different types of open cell that lend themselves better to gun storage. I'd go for the firmer open cell foam with a more "plasticy" texture. The soft stuff will tear easily when/if it snags on sights, etc... and will probably hold more moisture. If your worried about moisture, put some desiccant packets under the foam.

Just my opinion.
