Virginia on a Texas CHL?

Post by hi-power »

I'm planning a trip to Virginia to visit the wife's folks in mid-July and wondered if anyone has traveled by air from Texas to Virginia, (Reagan National), and carried in Virginia with a Texas CHL.

I've read some of the laws on packing.org, but it seemed a little thin. Apparently any place where alcohol is served is off limits to concealed carry, but you CAN carry openly there. No churches, schools, courts, etc.

Does anybody know of any other places to watch out for?

Thanks.

I'd print the state page the PDO has to offer...I am not sure how up to date it is, or if anything appreciable has changed in Virginia in a while...

Check this website http://www.handgunlaw.us./ out as well...It is a little more active and may have some better data on Virginia...

Have a great trip...

Every time I've visited my family in Virginia since getting my CHL I've carried. I usually fly from Bush Intercontinental (IAH) to Dulles (IAD), and I've never had a problem checking guns on either end.

In terms of places off limits, it is the standard places--schools (colleges/universities are OK), courthouses, federal property. You can't carry concealed somewhere that serves alcohol for on-premises consumption, but you can open carry there--I've done that several times and never had a problem with it.

If Virginia would get rid of the stupid "no concealed carry in restaurants" thing, I would say their carry laws would be better than Texas'. Their preemption statute is just as strong. As in Texas, localities cannot pass more restrictive gun laws and cannot prohibit carry unless it is permitted by state law.

Plus VA is in general a very gun-friendly state. Heck, their freshman Democratic senator's aide just got arrested in DC for holding onto the senator's carry gun for him (Sen. Webb apparently carries on the hill).

Do you normally buy ammo for your gun at you destination, after flying there?

I always take a couple boxes of defensive ammo with me, and I've never had a problem.

TSA says less than 11 pounds of ammo is fine as long as it is packed in a fully-enclosed container intended to carry ammo. I always keep a couple of empty boxes around for that reason.

Hi-Power, I'm traveling this week to North Carolina by air. I am not carrying my handgun with me. I've yet to do that as a friend of mine had his gun stolen after checking it in - it never arrived at the other end. To this day, he has yet to get his gun back.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have to think about this last one a lot. I only have one handgun at the moment and would hate to lose it.
