Quest for a 1911

Stopped at a hole in the wall gun shop today, and found a few 1911's. They had a Springfield that had adjustable rear sites that really caught my eye. It was almost a mirror image of the Gov. Issue. Maybe soon it will come to live with me. I could tell when I held it that we were mean't to be together. Seriously, what do ya'll know about Springfield's. They also had a Rock Island Armory, but it looked kinda cheap. Another piece I am looking at is those tiny .22 and .22 mag revolvers. My bud had one at work today and it was pretty cool.

I have a Springfield Armory GI .45 (not exactly like the one I suspect you were holding - mine has non-adjustable combat sights), and I love it. It may not be the prettiest gun I've ever seen, but I surely love to shoot it. Nothing else feels quite right when compared to my Springfield Armory GI .45.

I have two Springers. A Trophy Match and an old model Champion. They eat what I feed them and shoot where I point them every time. I have no complaints.

Carry a Springer & really like it.
Dollar spent, I believe they are the best out of the box buy out there.
My 02 cents & some think it worth half that much.

Rock Islands are your basic "budget 1911s." They work, sometimes surprisingly well, sometimes not. They may require a minor bit of tweaking, but generally perform adequately. They are NOT target guns, although they are capable of greater accuracy than most shooters can achieve with them (as are most firearms). They are decent guns, overall.

Between the two, I'd take the Springfield, though. Everything good about the Rock Island, but better. I have a Springfield that I'm "working on" (ie, shade-tree gunsmith customizing), that can outshoot me quite easily (Springfield Champion GI). There's a couple bugs I'm working on ironing out, but they're related to the parts I've swapped out, not the pistol itself. (And I'm trying to figger out -why- those bugs are cropping up, but that's another story)

If you're on a tight budget, I'd get the Rock Island, and slowly customize it for you. If you're not quite so concerned about cash, I'd get the Springfield, and have half the customizing and tweaks already done for you.

I recommend the Springfield. I have a Kimber as well and let me tell you I am having a nightmare with it, but that is for another post. I am also having a problem with a Springfield EMP but the difference in customer service between the two companies is night and day. While I will definitely buy another Springfield, right now I can't say the same about Kimber.

Springfield makes a good gun and their customer service is first rate. Same goes for Kimber.
Be careful buying a used 1911, regardless of what manufacturers name is on it until you really understand what you're looking at. 1911's are often victims of poor attempts at gunsmithing. Get a new one or get it from a trusted source. My .02

I have the same problem. Like cute puppies, the seem to want to follow me home and I am a sucker for cute puppies.

my Springfield loaded stainless eats anything and is a tackdriver
I did replace the rear sight with an adjustable and a dawson precision fiber front sight

I love it
had a Colt Series 80 that had some work done to it (both were bought used) never a problem with it but I sold it and then replaced a while later with the Springfield
