My first post! New to Texas! Recomendations Needed

Hi All,

I'm new to Texas (Dallas), and I have to tell you this is a GREAT site! I just took my CHL at DFW Gun Range Saturday, and sent in my application yesterday.

I need your suggestions, and I apologize in advance to the Mod's if this is in the wrong section - but there seemed to be many possible sections I could post this in and some of them hadn't had new topics added in some time.

I am looking to build my pistol skills to become more proficient for CCW and also thinking of getting involved with IDPA. I spent an hour last night and read through a million posts on training, and sent emails to several possible places but the one I was most interested in doesn't have any classes scheduled.

I have 2 questions:

-Living in the Dallas area, what are some recommendations on instructors for a 1 or 2 day seminar on pistol and shooting skills? I am beyond the "this is the end of the gun the bullet comes out" type training, but want to get proper training on the foundations :)

-Has anyone taken the intermediate and advanced pistol classes at the DFW gun range? Thoughts? I believe I want to go right into the advance class, as the intermediate class cover things such as "pistol nomenclature and functions" and "how to clean the pistol" - all areas I know. But I spoke with them yesterday and I can't take the advanced class unless I take the intermediate, even though their site claims I don't need to.

You will find we enjoy more freedoms here in the lone star state. Take classes as much as you can. You can never take to many!

Hi All,

I moved from Boston, so I think the state is down to only 3 gun owners left. I don't miss it one bit. I love how friendly everyone is down here. In Boston, even though I was born and raised there, I always felt out of place with how rude and curt everyone was. Plus, it was so anti-gun it was driving me crazy. I could tell you stories about the laws that you just wouldn't believe me because they are so crazy.

I hope I can get some training recommendations!

OOHHH, I know to well about Bean town and the Communist republic of Mass. Great downtown area though. I still have a friend that lives in Free Mass. LOL.....and one in NH.

Welcome to Texas.

I'm hoping you've found the NRA's website. The NRA sponsors a lot of classes that are very helpful.

Also, many people on this forum are instructors. You may enjoy taking classes from them or just messaging here.

This forum also has a designated day that we all get to meet IRL and shoot together. It's a blast. It's held near Houston, but forum members drive in from Austin and Dallas as well. If you attend the forum day, you will learn a lot, and you get to meet a lot of interesting and/or fun people.

Forum day is in the fall sometime. In 2006, it was on September 30.

DFW does not really offer that class. I know it is listed in their literature, but they don't.

DFW is a disorganized place, and they have no one qualified to teach an intermediate class, much less an advanced one.

Nope, the others moved to New Hampshire.

Welcome to Texas! Within the next couple of years, I'm going to be headed the opposite direction, and make the move to NH, where the gun-friendly culture makes Texas look like pretenders.
