Sig .380 vs Ruger LCR

Post by 9mmfish »

Looking for a pocket carry and it's between these two.

Have run the specs and they are close with the LCR dimension wise being just a little larger and obviously a better grain weight but less barrel length.

Two things I'm taking into consideration are: 1) Shooting comfort. I want to be able to enjoy taking it to the range. 2) It will be my daughters gun in a year or so when she turns 21. She has said that the gun of choice has to have a safety.

I really like both of them on paper and holding them.

Willing to listen to other ideas as well.

I have a M&P 9C that will be my everyday carry once my CHL arrives. Have been waiting since 4/1.

1st time poster so go easy on me. :fire

I should have said that the P238 is what I'm considering.

Neither are my choice for pocket carry, but I did want to say that I really like your primary carry choice!

The Sig is SAO, so it is in condition one with the hammer back when a round is chambered. My wife recently got one and it is a sweet shooter.

I have both the LCR and the Sig P238, personally I think the LCR is a bit big for a pocket carry gun, I use that with a tuckable IWB. The P238 does work for me as a pocket gun and also IWB as well, very easy to hide. They are both very good shooters and the triggers are really good as well. IMO you cannot go wrong with either one, I would carry the 238 more than I do but my wife has claimed it as hers........

Apprecite the info received so far.

CompVest what do you like for pocket carry?

Salty1 I agree that the LCR is probably a little big. I like it because I think a revolver in the rotation is a good idea.

I like the Kel-tecs. My favorite is the 32. It is just so darn small and light. It can go and hide anywhere. I like it better than the 380 as it is easier to shoot and smaller. I have no trouble making a 2" group at 15 yards with it. I have a Comp-tac Centerline holster I like to carry it in. I changed the parachute cord for a gold chain. Now, I just hang it around my neck under any shirt and no one would ever guess what is at the end of the chain!

My other favorite carry method for it beside my purse is the belt clip accessory I got for it. This allows me to put it anywhere and hide it.

Is that the clipdraw? I was contemplating one of those but I am yet to be convinced. Frankly I think it spoils the look of the gun but who cares about luck when lives are at stake right?

Does the clip effect/prevent the use of a different holster?

LCR doesn't have any type of external manual safety does it?

I've held and dry fired, but not live fired, both of these guns and like them both. Agree the LCR seems a bit large for pocket carry (slightly larger than a S&W J-frame). But unless you've trained your daughter VERY WELL, I'd be more inclined to go with a DA-only firearm like the LCR over a Condition 1 SAO like the P238. Used to own/carry a Colt Mustang, and P238 is a nearly exact replica. Colt was a sweet-shootin little gun and very pocketable.

You might take a look at the new Taurus "Slim" model. It might be pocketable depending on your pockets. Nice little gun. Trigger bugs me, but it might be to your liking. This is basically a point-n-shoot gun, but it does have an external safety if that is really important.

Other obvious suggestions: Kel Tecs, Kahrs, Ruger LCP, S&W J-frame revolvers, Bersa Thunder .380, Walther PPK .... more at http://www.mouseguns.com/PocketAutoComparison.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have a Bersa .380 and I really like it. She will probably get it until she becomes proficient.

I agree about the condition 1 SAO aspect. I am not sure about this part of it. I for awhile would only go with condition 3.

The LCR in DAO with laser grips (I like the laser grip option ) and the Sig (I like the look and feel) in SAO is why I'm struggling to make a final decision on which way to go because I know the sig is the better pocket carry choice. :headscratch

For my money, it's gotta be the Sig.
Any .38 revolver is too big for my pockets.

I currently carry an LCP, but will buy a Sig soon.

Just in case you have not thought about this, please use a pocket holster regardless of what gun you end up carrying in your pocket and make sure the holster covers the trigger.

I frequently pocket carry an LCR but you will need deeper pockets in order to comfortably carry it. You won’t be able to carry the LCR in a front pocket of a pair of jeans. Also, the LCR will be a little more bulky than the Sig 380. The LCR only holds 5 rounds so I also carry a 5 round speed strip.

I also carry an LCP in a wallet holster and most of the time I forget I’m carrying it in my back pocket.

What I’m wearing usually dictates what I can carry. For this time of year it’s an LCR in the front pocket and an LCP in the back pocket. Otherwise it’s an XD9 Sub-compact in an IWB holster with the LCP in a wallet holster in the back pocket.

For a range gun both the Sig and the LCR will be snappy. Shooting an LCR in 38 Special +P at the range will leave your hand sore if your shooting more than about 150 rounds, at least it is for me. I can shoot 500 rounds of 380 in the LCP without any problems since the recoil is so much less than the LCR.

In my opinion, my choice of gun for pocket carry for self-defense would be different than my choice for a range gun. For self-defense, I would choose the most gun I could comfortably carry. However the self-defense gun would be a handful at the range for a day of shooting, but for me I would be okay with that tradeoff.

I actually like the Taurus tcp 380. You can pick one up at academy for about $200 plus tax. Very easy to shoot and simple to clean.

If considering the Sig, I should also throw the Kahr P380 into the ring. I have one that I use as a bug or even sometimes, when attire dictates, my only ccw. I think as with all Kahrs, it's a little more picky about quality ammo and needs to be properly broken in, but it's a sweet shooter... small, accurate, and easy on the hands. Not trying to make a decision more difficult, but I enjoy mine.
