I just ordered a 12.5" Apex handguard with top rail and 2" accessory bottom rail and a Syrac adjustable low profile gas block. Now I'm glass shopping. The two contenders at this point are both First Focal Plane models - the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP (sub $1k) and the Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm ER/T M5 (~$1.7k.) The jury is out if the Lupy is worth almost $1K more than the Vortex.
When I scoped my custom AR10, I paired the choices down to these three:
- IOR 6-24x50 Tactical 35mm Rifle Scope, $1,599.95, http://swfa.com/IOR-6-24x50-Tactical-35 ... P8947.aspx
- Leupold 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 ER/T 30mm Riflescope, $1,899.95, http://swfa.com/Leupold-85-25x50-Mark-4 ... 45012.aspx
- SWFA SS HD 5-20x50 Tactical 30mm Riflescope, $1,499.95, http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-HD-5-20x50-Tact ... 51642.aspx
I drove to SWFA, and I was able to handle all three scopes, and to sight through them at a water tower a little over 400 yards away to get an idea of the quality of the reticles and the clarity of the glass. All three were FFP scopes. Of the three, the Leupold and the SWFA had the best reticles, but the Leupold's was not illuminated. The SWFA's had the most unique reticle design and offered the most ways to range a target, and it
was illuminated. The IOR Valdata's glass was really clear, but the reticle was coarser....although it was illuminated....and because it is a 35mm tube, there is the problem of limited mount/ring selection. Of the three, the SWFA was the only one with HD glass. Maximum magnification for the three scopes was 24X for the IOR Valdata, 25X for the Leupold, and 20X for the SWFA. Lest the SWFA seem weak by comparison, at 20X an object located 1,000 yards away will appear as if it were only 50 yards away to the naked eye.
At the end of the day, I went with the SWFA scope. It had the best reticle, the clearest glass, was built like a tank, had more than sufficient magnification, and was a full $100 cheaper than the 2nd cheapest scope, and was a full $400 cheaper than the most expensive scope.
I have had no regrets whatsoever. It is a
wonderful scope, and it comes in midway in price between the Leupold you are considering and the Vortex scope.
I mounted the scope with a Bobro Precision Optic 30mm Mount, $199.95,
