An Irving woman was recovering from a weekend attack after a man slipped into her apartment as she was letting out her cat.
Gail Meyers, 53, told Irving police that a man crept through a door she had left open for her cat at the Newport Apartments about 4 a.m. Sunday. She said the man ripped off her clothes and tried to assault.
Ms. Meyers, who was recovering from major back surgery, she said she found the energy to kick, fight and scream until the man fled.
"He had no weapon; so, I was going to fight for my life," she said.
Screaming for help, Ms. Meyers said she kicked the intruder several times until he took off. After she said he escaped through the door he had entered just minutes before, Ms. Meyers grabbed the phone to call 911.
"I slammed the door shut, put the bolt back in and called the police and they were here in about five minutes," she said.
Ms. Meyers and others in the apartment complex said they believe a sexual predator was living nearby and looking for opportunities to strike.
"He's just looking around for lights that are on," Ms. Meyers said. "I turned my light on and he just wandered in the minute I opened my door."
Ms. Meyers said she has heard of three reports of a "Peeping Tom" in the area.
Irving police said they will interview residents at the apartment complex Monday.

I'm familiar with that area...over there by Kroger that's on Beltline and Northgate. That general area screams "bad juju" which is why I pay the extra money and shop at Tom Thumb across the way. I tend to agree with the victim in that it probably is someone watching and choosing victims. Just seems like too many coincidences...woman letting her cat at @ 0400, perp just happens to be there unarmed, victim just happens to be recovering from surgery. Smells kind of fishy to me.

I'm glad she chose to fight this guy.
