The forgotten years of terrorism: 1974-7

Post by seamusTX »

Between 1974 and 1977, there were more than 50 terrorist bombings in the U.S. and many more in the U.K., Israel, and other countries.

In 1975, two lunatics named Sara Jane Moore and Lynette Alice "Squeaky" Fromme attempted to assassinate President Ford in separate incidents.

On December 29, 1975, eleven people were killed and many more seriously injured by a bomb that exploded in La Guardia airport in New York City. This crime has never been solved.

Zvonko Busic, a Croatian nationalist living in the U.S., was convicted of a 1976 bombing that severely injured a New York City police officer and of an airline hijacking. He served over 30 years in prison. In July 2008, he was released on parole with a condition of leaving the U.S. permanently. He has long been considered a suspect in the La Guardia bombing, but no evidence was ever obtained.

In 1977, American-born Muslim terrorists took over three buildings in Washington, D.C., including the city council chamber, and took over 100 hostages. One person was killed. Among the injured were the future mayor of Washington, Marion Berry.

Other incidents from this era are blamed on the Puerto Rican nationalist group F.A.L.N., the Symbionese Liberation Army, the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and the Irish Republican Army.

I was an adult at that time. I read the newspaper every day. But I have forgotten all of this except the presidential assassination attempts. It's like a bad dream.

Yet more evidence of the truth of Ecclesiastes 1:9, and the absurdity of the "post-9/11 world" excuses.

And the 13th Avenue fire, in 1973, at NY Telephone's central office was eventually proved to be sabotage and probably F.A.L.N. related. I knew of the fire from the papers and tv news and within hours was sent to NY to be a member of the fire restoration team, in a position I wasn't qualified for, which is a whole 'nother funny story.

Jim, now that you posted this, of course I remember all of these events.....except maybe the La Guardia bombing. But as with you, they had faded in my memory. Isn't it funny how all of that blew over eventually........without the Patriot Act?

And then there were the depredations of the SDS/Weather Underground, and Bill Ayers' and Bernadine Dohrn's bombing which murdered one officer and blinded another. There was the Symbionese Liberation Army's run of murders and bank robberies. The PLO airline hijackings, etc., etc., etc.

Now they have their own country and are loved by Obama and the Democrats. Maybe there's a lesson there.

I was born in 1965. In 1971-1972 I was in kindergarten in Frankfort, Germany. If a week went past that there was not a bomb threat against the school it was an odd week. At that time, "Baader-Meinhof" or “Red Army Faction” was active in Germany and actually drew a measure of support that violent leftists in the United States, like the Weather Underground, never enjoyed.

It hit close to home on May 11, 1972 when the building my father worked in was bombed and my father’s friend, co-worker, and fellow soldier, LTC Paul Bloomquist was killed. I remember all those bomb threats against the school I went to and how after a while it became routine; but the fact the violent leftists will use children as targets to get what they want sickens me.

Part of what makes me a freedom loving American are the events of my childhood. From the constant bomb threats against the school I attended to the vacation the family took to West Berlin in 1973 and looking over “The Wall” and seeing what the lack of freedom offers. I abhor what I saw to that day, and now the leftists want to steer us towards socialism? Not on my watch.

P.S. The part I find really odd, my older brother and sister are both leftists. I really want to shake them at times and make them remember standing on the platform overlooking that Wall, and what East Berlin looked like. Remember the Checkpoint Charlie museum with the photos of the people risking life and limb to escape through the razor wire. Remember the armed guards not tasked with keeping westerners out, but keeping easterners in. How can anyone fall for the lies of the socialist left with these imagines in their minds? :banghead:

The Red Brigades was another one. That was some bad juju. Among other things they kidnapped and killed Aldo Moro, the prime minister of Italy.

I didn't know whether to chuckle or weep when I heard that "everything has changed" nonsense after September 11, 2001.

Don't give up on your siblings. My best friend in high school became a card carrying SDS member, spouting revolution and death to capitalists back in the 60's and 70's. He told my mom he'd spare her and my dad when the revolution came. He's now so far right the Guadalupe Co Republicans who used to meet at his pub in Mcqueeny asked him to "unjoin" :smilelol5: He hosts rallies for Ron Paul!

More like an unending waking nightmare.

There are links to further terrorist activities by year at the bottom of the page.
The U.S. has avoided the level of jihadist/radical mayhem seen everywhere, 1st world to 3rd world, in a post 9/11 era that has seen terrorist attacks quadruple. Yes I know there have been the so called, Lone Wolf attacks, I don't know of anyway to effectively stop those, do you? Call it luck, God's blessings, or heaven forbid that those portrayed as Keystone Kops, DHS, may actually be doing something positive to protect us.

To answer your question, no, I don't know how to stop a determined lone lunatic from dealing out as much mayhem as he can pull off.

It's a matter of layers of security and intelligence. Most of the wanna-be terrorists and mass murderers who have been stopped, have been detected in the course of recruitment or trying to acquire explosives or something illegal.

I sincerely think the U.S. has been spared a lot of this violence because this is literally the land of opportunity. Someone can come here, drive a taxi, open a felafel shop, a convenience store, send his kids to college, etc. They don't want to blow themselves up for some insane ideology.

"They don't want to blow themselves up for some insane ideology."

I think they prove they will almost daily. The parents celibrate. The children are brainwashed from birth.

This will be a real problem.

Sure. Believe whatever you like. I do. I still believe Abraham Lincoln's declaration of America as the last best hope of earth.
