Houston Children's museum, and zoo
Thinking of taking the kids to the zoo or children's museum. anyone been there recently that can tell me if they are posted?
Re: Houston Children's museum, and zoo
The Houston Zoo can post if it likes, you do not have to obey that sign, the zoo and anything in the confines of hermann park is city property and therefore any 30:06 signage is not enforceable. the childrens museum I am not sure about but I do believe that the building is city owned and like the zoo it would be unenforceable. ok yep the HCM is city property and is an unenforceable sign, I know the zoo is not posted but not sure about HCM

The childrens museum is posted but not properly. The sign is entirely too small and somewhat obscure. Carry away!

carry whenever and wherever possible. you never know when you'll need it. its not being paranoid, its being prepared.

Re: Houston Children's museum, and zoo
The Houston Zoo is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization and their website states they are a non-profit and educational organization. Even their IRS Form 990 states they are educational. Therefore it is not legally acceptable to carry a licensed or unlicensed weapon within the facility. I imagine the same educational status would apply to the museum?

The land on which the zoo sits is owned by the City of Houston, thus TPC §30.06(e) applies.jjjtadpole wrote:The Houston Zoo is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization and their website states they are a non-profit and educational organization. And an educational non-profit is not automatically a school.

No amount of coffee is overcoming the sleep deprivation induced by a 14 month old teething through the night... I completely missed the word "zoo" in this entire thread. My mistake.Charles L. It doesnt matter what they are registered as, it is city land. Period. End of the issue. Read the relevant law.jjjtadpole wrote:The Houston Zoo is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization and their website states they are a non-profit and educational organization. Wouldn't this be like that restaurant inside Fair Park? It's on city owned land, but is still a private business capable of posting an enforceable 30.06 sign, right? So, if something is privately owned, even though it is on city owned land, can't a properly posted 30.06 sign be enforceable?
BTW, I don't know if either the zoo or museum are privately owned or not.

Re: Houston Children's museum, and zoo
if the building/property is owned or leased by a governmental agency it can be posted but not enforced, it does NOT matter who is renting or using the building. Short term rentals within exhibit halls are also not allowed to post signs as they are in violation of the law, there is no exception in the subsection that gives a renter/lessee the right to post if the building/property is owned by a governmental agency. as far as private property rights for renters on government property those rights are subject to the same limitations as governmental buildings.
The Zoo is run by a non profit group, but city owned property, the children's museum used to be owned by the city but has been sold to the HCM Inc.

Re: Houston Children's museum, and zoo
As of Sept. 14th of 2015 you can conceal carry at the zoo. I would assume that if they can't prevent you from conceal caring then now we have the right to open carry.

My question is wouldn't the same rule of law apply to the Children's Museum of Houston. Like the zoo it is privately owned, but the city of Houston owns the building.
Anyone have any information on that?
