It's my understanding that any written notice (in regards to an employee handbook, for example) has to conform to 30.06 wording to legally prevent a CHL from carrying on the premises of a place that's not otherwise restricted.

so, assuming it's not explicitly written that way, my understanding is the OP wouldn't be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor if he/she carried at work. Granted, he/she could be terminated for violating the handbook, but not legally charged with an offense.

however, the way I understand it, if the HR manager or someone else authorized specifically says "firearms are not allowed on the premises" during the orientation, that also counts as (oral) notice.

Is that correct?

My understanding is 30.06 makes it illegal. Employee handbook without 30.06 = can get fired if caught but not illegal.

As to the original post... same here! We as employees can't carry, but anyone (with CHL) off the street can. Although, they did recently update the directives saying we could store our weapons in our "privately, locked vehicles" in the parking lots. I think its crazy, but I think its because of libilty issues on their part. Over the years, several employees have had guns pulled on them from irrate customers and all we can do is leave (if possible) and call the police. Thankfully no body has been shot...YET!

Even though I'm self employed, my ability to carry is dependent upon each individual client. The only one that really causes me issues is a federal client. I have to totally disarm myself and my vehicle before I head out. Let's just say I feel naked when that happens.

Thanks for the thread reference sir. The CHL policy for TxDOT to my understanding has been the same for the last 6-7 years on allowing CHL member to carry.

I took a job at TXDOT about four years ago and there was a big deal made at my (2 day ) orientation as to how it was not allowed under any circumstances and that if you knew of anybody who had a firearm with them or in their vehicle you were required to inform your supervisor immediately. I didn't even have my CHL yet though I'd been in the process of researching the laws in anticipation of getting it. Another newbie and I spent the next two breaks arguing with the instructor about how ridiculous the policy was, of course to no avail. Wasn't her fault, that stuff comes down from on high and there ain't nothing you were going to be able to do about it.

This was but one of many policies and other idiocy that I couldn't deal with, so I moved on to something else. TXDOT was the definition of train wreck. I hope for the state's sake the new regime is making long overdue improvements, but I digress.

Everything you say is so true, even the change to the HR policy was done quietly. I've been with TxDot 8 years to long, just last year weapons were allowed in personal vehicles only, you get caught with it inside the gates and your canned.

Our district is more than a train wreck!!! If you do your job your a trouble maker, if you allow the contractor to screw you and the taxpayers of Texas, they love you, its crazy!!!
