My barber gets his CHL

Having been born with a flat top, I surely know the value of a good barber when I find one. I have been going to an "old school barber" for about a year now, after my last barber moved. He and I chat about his hobbies while he cuts my hair. He's been cutting hair for over 35 years and I'm guessing that he is in his late 60's. Out of the blue today he asks me if I've ever taken that test to carry a weapon concealed. I was caught off-guard, and I immediatley started to wonder how he could tell I was carrying. I then rememberd that he probably trusts me because a few times I have been his last customer and I always let him know that I will wait outside in the car until he locks up and is safe in his car (not in a bad area, but defintely questionable).

Before I could answer he tells me that he took his class last weekend. He then held up his hand to proudly show me some small hammer bites, and brag about his score even though it was the first time he'd ever shot that gun. I tried to get him to check out the forum, but he doesn't own a computer and doesn't want one. I didn't ask him what made him decide to get it, but I will next time I'm there. It definetly brought a smile to face.

you might offer to meet him at the range some day and offer some tips on handling and shooting his handgun

Good suggestion from liberty.

I dont know where his shop is but I do know the BGs have not yet discovered small Barber Shops as really good Stop & Robs. My barber fits every criteria for a prime place to rob.

Mostly cash business.
One barber.
On a main highway w/ lots of trafic & noise.
Next building 200 ft.
Short distance to numerous side roads.

Hold up by last "customer," shoot him & I doubt it would even be heard. He would not be missed until he did not come home.

My barber has been robbed 3 times in 5 years. Each time was in the parking lot after he closed.

Last year my son and I convinced him to get his CHL. As a matter of fact, he went to the same class as my oldest daughter.

I have taken him shooting several times and he went to a couple of gun shows with me.

Last week I went in and he showed me his new Les Baer Custom. (hope his prices don't go up now). Went Sunday afternoon with him to put a few down range.

In certain communities, they're frequent targets, as are barber/beauty schools and beauty supply stores.

Must be a regional/cultural thing.

As I got seated at my barber shop a while back, still wearing my cover garment, my carry gun clunked against the chair, making it obvious what was where. The barber told me that unless I was uncomfortable he had no problem with me carrying open in his shop, but being concerned about the legality I never have.

What do you mean by being concrened about the legality? Am I reading that wrong.

I did just that. I wish that he had a computer so he could log onto the forum. He stays very active with his other hobby so I don't think that will change. i am trying to get him to the range however. I know that he used to hunt and has been around firearms. I don't think he has a lot of experience with pistols though.

What do you mean by being concrened about the legality? Am I reading that wrong.

I'm not Jim, but: "the legality of carrying openly in his shop" was the issue. Unless you're engaged in a sporting activity using a handgun, or on/in property you own or control, then open carry is illegal in Texas.

You can openly carry in your own yard all day long, as can your neighbor, but the moment either of you steps across the property line you'd be Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon. Having the permission of the private property owner is not an exception to UCW.

Here is another example.
I openly carry on my own property. Son comes for visit & he must cover.
I go to his house & he OCs. I have to conceal.
Bummer.

It's not that open carry is specifically illegal. Instead, having a handgun on or about your person is always illegal, whether open or concealed, unless you meet certain exceptions. One exception is that you have a CHL and the handgun is concealed. Another is that you are on property you own or control (open or concealed is immaterial in that case). Same for traveling, or engaging in a sporting activity requiring use of the handgun (or en route to or from such sporting activity).

Looks like I need to make changes. I normally don't worry about it when my shirt rides up when I'm tooling around with neighbor's livestock. I guess I'll need to be more careful.

IMO, if you're on private property and not close to the road, you don't have to worry about it. No one is going to be looking at you with a telescope.

I've been shooting on a friend's property (a horse ranch) for years. I've had no trouble or inquiries from the police.
