Online Renewal

Post by FAAPOD »

I have a quick question about the online renewal process. I just got my '6-month letter' and my existing license will expire in September. This will be my first renewal. Can I fill out all of the information online now, and then submit the paperwork from the course when I take it, or do I need to submit the proof of the course at the same time that I complete the application online?

You can do the online application now but you have to pay now. I dont think there is any advantage to doing the online months before the class unless the money will burn a hole in your pocket otherwise.

You do the online application now (but don't wait until last minute in your six month renewal period) - then you will know if your DL photo or existing CHL photo will be reused or not, and if DPS will require a new set of fingerprints or not. You can take your renewal course anytime within the six months and either hold it if you have not done the online renewal or go on and submit it if you have completed it. DPS wants the hard copy of the renewal class form - but when they temporarily "misplaced" my class renewal form - there is a section of the online status check that allows you to attach files and submit. I simply sent them a perfect PDF of my form by email. Be very nice if submitting all of the forms could be done like that and we would not have to send snail mail/UPS/FedEx.

Swamped??? It took them from feb. 19 until March 15th to have my plastic at my door. While I agree that one might as well go ahead and get it started, they sure don't seem swamped to the point of causing delays on renewals.

I did my renewal 3-4 months before my birthday to be safe, but that much lead time wasn't necessary. I did the online application a couple of nights before the Saturday renewal class, so I could mail everything the following Monday.

OK, so I did the online application and paid the fees. I was working at a computer that doesn't have a printer, so I couldn't print the sheet with the bar code. I thought surely that I would be able to pull it up by logging in to my account. No dice. I took my class on Saturday and I'm ready to send in my CHL-100, but I understand I need the sheet with the bar code so they can match my CHL-100 with the application and payment I made online. I've sent an email to Customer Relations, but I probably won't hear back for a few days.

I am thinking they sent me that form in an email. Maybe not but I think I printed it out a month after I paid the fees online.

I think they are swamped.

Sent my renewal in and was received (certified mail) on March 7.

On-line status still says "pending receipt of required materials"....<sigh>

Figure I'll give it to the last of April before I call......that'd be 60 days.

My old license will run out at the end of May.

A couple of folks in the class said they got theirs in an email too. I didn't get an email after paying the fees, which I also thought weird.

Check the email they sent you for an attachment. They sent me that bar code after I paid the fee.

Weird. I don't know then. I definitely recieved an email. It was from a "donotreply" email address. Check your junk folders. I have Verizon and those tards decided it was junk and tossed it in my junk folder. I found it and remembered what happened.

Below is the email. My bar code was across the top of it. I deleted it to post here.

Thank you for using Texas.gov to submit your Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) Concealed Handgun Licensing Handgun License Renewal application.

See the checklist for additional items that must be sent to TxDPS. Your application will be considered "incomplete" until all checklist items have been received. To assist in the processing of your application, please make sure you include a copy of your receipt page and all of the items on your checklist before mailing.

Texas Department of Public Safety
Concealed Handgun Licensing Program, MSC 0245
PO Box 4087
Austin, TX 78773-0245

Below is your checklist of required supporting documentation:

Checklist (or your confirmation email containing the transaction barcode)
CHL-100 Training Form* (received from CHL instructor upon course completion)
TxDPS will attempt to use the passport photo and resubmit the fingerprints on file for your renewal application. If either of these items does not meet current quality standards, TxDPS will notify the applicant and a new submission will be required.

* CHL-100 (proof of Continuing Education course completion) is required for 1st and 2nd time renewals. After the 2nd renewal, applicants must complete a Continuing Education course once every 10 years (GC§411.185). Applicants do not have to take a course for their third consecutive renewal if a course was completed on the previous renewal.
Please note:

TxDPS cannot process your application until all Required Items are received.
Send in all Required Items, including checklist, at one time.
Inaccurate or incomplete information will delay the processing of your application.
Required Items must be received by TxDPS within 12 months of your online application. Failure to submit all information within this time period will result in termination of your application. If your information is not received within this time period, your application will be terminated and the fee will not be refunded. (Note: Once any part of the application is received by TxDPS, the application is subject to any deadlines set forth by the notification or request for information from the Department.)
