criminal history...will it get me rejected?
Last Saturday i took a CHL class with my mother. I'm 24 years old , but five years ago i was with some friends and a fight happend and a friend took the guys wallet. We all got charged with robbery, the charges were dropped and have papers the prove that. Also when i was 16 i got a dui and mip they are long gone on my record. Last Saturday i bought a new pistol. The background check obviously came back clean, because they let me walk with my firearm within 15 minutes. Is it worth it to spend the application fee or do you guys believe I will get rejected so don't try it? I'm a mobile xray tech and drive around for a living and find myself in pretty rough areas on a daily basis. I would love to exersice my right to carry a firearm, but i'm not sure if my childhood mistakes will stop me from doing so.

I see it is your first post, so welcome.
IANAL, but I believe you should be alright. The UI and MIP are both more than 5 years old. There will be people that come along that know for certain.

The DUI/MIP are more than 5 years old, and you were not convicted of felony, so I don't see any obvious problems based on what you have stated. However, you MUST disclose your arrest on your application to DPS, even though the charges were dropped. Be honest on the application to DPS, and I don't think you should have any problems.

I'm sure they are pretty backed up with the gun frenzy that is going on! I bought a carry gun last week a Ruger sr9c i did some research on it, but do you guys feel that was a good choice? i wanted a compact 9 since i'm a smaller guy.

Be aware that you prolly won't be able to carry in your x-ray rig. If you go to a plant they are usually declared FTZ and you can't carry, however if your popping film on pipeline you might be ok.sr9c wrote:Last Saturday i took a CHL class with my mother. Oh, BTW, if you tell DPS that you are an x-ray tech then your background would make you look like a saint.

I have an SR9c and I think it is a good pistol. Its not flashy or fancy, but few Rugers are...what it is, its reliable and fairly accurate, and for me, it fits my hand well. Of course, the important thing with any pistol you would trust your life to is to practice with it, and to carry ammo that you have run through the pistol and know that it works with it. I have a reasonably-priced leather IWB (inside waist band) Don Hume holster for it. I also have a shoulder rig made for a Sig P228/229 that fits the Ruger SR9c very well.
Re: criminal history...will it get me rejected?
thanks for the the great information. I'm a mobile xray tech which means i do most of my work in nursing homes which i wont' be able to carry into, but i do alot of private homes which leave me in the ghetto and our vans stick out. I had a scare a couple weeks ago. I went today and got all my court documents. I plan on finishing my application tonight. Does anyone here use CHL insurance like [Pre-paid legal service]?
Re: criminal history...will it get me rejected?
There is no law against carrying into a nursing home unless the building is posted with a 30.06 sign or you are told by the management that you can't carry.sr9c wrote:thanks for the the great information. I go to tons of nursing homes and have yet to see one that doesn't have 30.06 posted. The only thing that worries me is leaving it in my van.

If you have no choice but to leave it in the van, I'd recommend investing in something like this:sr9c wrote:I go to tons of nursing homes and have yet to see one that doesn't have 30.06 posted. The only thing that worries me is leaving it in my van.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the path to becoming a legal concealed carry holder.Keith B wrote:There is no law against carrying into a nursing home unless the building is posted with a 30.06 sign or you are told by the management that you can't carry.sr9c wrote:thanks for the the great information. You'll find TONS of good information from lots of exceptional people on here - I've only been here on the forum about a year now, and I consider it my daily dose of grad school education on CHL rules, guidelines, and best practices.
Building on what Keith B. said, however...don't ask the management if you can or cannot carry. If it is not posted, then assume you can, and keep it concealed. If you ask, there is a VERY high probability that they'll tell you 'no', and once that happens, you've received oral notification, which is as binding as a 30.06 sign. Once notified, you cannot carry.
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
