Need info on crimes against people going to and from work

I am attempting to convince my employer to allow CHL holders to keep their firearms in their vehicle while at work. What I need to make my argument more convincing are actual examples of people who were targets of crime specifically while traveling to and from work. I will accept both stories where the victim was unarmed and had bad results and where the victim was armed and had good results. Any state is acceptable.

These need to be real stories with links that I can reference and/or verify.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

It's been 23 years since my mother was abducted and murdered on her way home from work.

Go to http://www.nraila.org/ArmedCitizen/Default.aspx and search for "work" and "hospital." Many assaults take place near hospitals. It seems lunatics and criminals are attracted to them. The Cook County-Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's-University of Illinois hospital complex in Chicago was particularly notorious for attacks on female nurses and medical students.

I understand what you're trying to do; but in general it will be difficult to find such stories. If someone is attacked at a shopping mall or gas station, it usually is irrelevant to the story where they were coming from or going to.

Somebody here posted a website with houston crime stats by location.

Parking lots and sidewalks/streets are some of the riskier locations. Essentially, if you're out and about on foot your're at an elevated risk.

I'd have to check with the security folks at JPMorgan/Chase Tower to see if the video still exists but three of their cameras caught a guy accosting me on the corner of Travis and Capital in front of the building. When HPD showed no interest in taking the report, I failed to follow up and get copies of the video. I should have gotten them just for educational purposes. The video showed me with my back against my truck when I eventually was forced to draw. Fortunately, the video also shows the suspect dropping his brick and turning away to beat feet after which I got in my truck and got the heck out of Dodge.

Ironically, I had my own incident on the way to work this morning.

I had to stop by the courthouse on the way to work to handle a car title issue. My vehicle was dirty, so I pulled into the self-service car wash next door. It was a good time since the place was empty, I was right there and didn't have any early meetings to worry about.

As I'm finishing rinsing my car, aparently in condition white, I am approached by a 30-ish male. He was within 10 feet when I first saw him (had been facing the other way), and there was a 20-ish year old van parked behind him conveniently pointed right at the exit. I did not take my eyes off of him long enough to search the vehicle for occupants.

I was on my way to work, so not only was I not armed with my pistol, it was not in my car and my suitable fighting knives were similarly situated. I was also dressed like I had a job (e.g., money).

He proceeded to assure me he was not asking for money, but instead was asking me for gasoline with a hard luck story. I stalled for a bit and luckily another car drove in for a wash. I declined to help and he left.

So, the only thing that stopped me from being mugged (or worse) was either (a) an unexpected witness, or (b) his desire to not do so.

In retrospect, part of me wishes that I had handed over my entire wallet to the guy and told him to leave me alone. File a police report. Then I would have a pretty strong case of my own at work trying to convice them to let us have our guns in the car to protect us to and from work. But I didn't....

The gasoline scam is ubiquitous. Having met you, I would say that only someone whose brains are addled would try to rob you.

Were you at the Galveston County office in League City? Do they have a bogus 30.06 sign?

I think a high-pressure blast of soap in the eyes would be a pretty good defensive weapon. If your time has run out, the wand would still make a darn good baton for thrusting.

Yes. There are offices of the court in that building to consider as well.

I think a high-pressure blast of soap in the eyes would be a pretty good defensive weapon. If your time has run out, the wand would still make a darn good baton for thrusting.

I had just turned around from having put it away. We ended up at interview distance (~3-5 feet). If there were any weapons to be used, they would come from him.

I figured there might be, but a 30.06 sign is still meaningless.

Galveston County has 30.06 signs on other buildings, such as the senior citizens center in Galveston. I can't figure out why they do it. Mr. Sistrunk is not notably anti-RKBA or CHL.

If there were any weapons to be used, they would come from him.

Pepper spray. I don't leave home without it.
