Aransas Pass City Policy Allows Employee Carry at work

The City Council there voted to approve the new policy on Tuesday , so long as the people carrying guns are qualified to do so.

The chief [Aransas Pass Police Chief Eric Blanchard] got the idea for the new policy after performing some recent active-shooter drills in city buildings, like at City Hall and at the Code Enforcement building. The police said they found that employees simply would not be safe in an active shooter situation.

The chief also said:

"Some of the concerns that have been expressed since this has, you know, hit the public light, is that, well, I'm a little fearful that the employee shouldn't be carrying a gun. What if they decide and go nuts?" Blanchard said. "Well, what I would say to that is, if this employee decides to go crazy and pull their gun for mal intent, I hope that the employee standing next to them is able to subdue that threat before there's mass casualty."

Wow...an employer making sense....
Blanchard also said that, if you meet the state requirements and the requirements that are established by the City Manager and police department, why not give people the same rights they would have outside of work.
And the Chief sounding like a sensible individual, instead of a politician. Then again, it is a small community and I imagine that most small town chiefs and sheriffs are going to have a similar point of view, as opposed to chiefs and sheriffs in large metro areas, who are definitely politicians..

But every small municipality (and school district) that makes this call starts building empirical data that the world DOESN'T collapse in a fiery maelstrom... and eventually that accumulated data could help pass bills in Austin in the future for our cause.
I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal

So what is the city going to set as "qualifications" to carry at work?

Do the employees simply need to be a CHL?

Do they have to qualify on the range at the cop shop?
