Finally got all the components in to start reloading for my .45-70.

5x 400gr Speer on top of Trail Boss for fun
10x 300gr Sierra on top of Trail Boss for even more fun :fire

then for potential use out on piggies later this year:

5x 400gr Speer on top of IMR4198
5x 300gr Sierra on top of IMR4198

Should be very interesting. It's all Winchester brass from the 300gr SuperX factory loads.

Just starting loads for now (Marlin levels on the 4198 per IMR's data). I'll start dialing them in later as I suspect that the starting loads may be ...sufficiently recoiltastic :biggrinjester:

Cool. I really need a friend with a .45/70. Just so I wouldn't be tempted to eventually get one myself. :biggrinjester:

The Marlin level loads were not as bad as I feared. I felt them, but not to the level as shooting factory loads before I added the limbsaver. I wasn't checking fine accuracy this time around since the scope wasn't mounted. All 18 rounds were on the same target. Just function testing & fun with iron sights.

The Trail Boss rounds were right on the money as were the 400gr bullets over the 4198. The 300gr over 4198 on the other hand had a dramatically different POI. They are the 5 rounds that are clustered high and to the left. They were moving at a significant (for a .45-70) clip though and were the hardest kicking of the bunch with 9 more grains of 4198 under them than the 400gr bullets.

All of the Trail boss loads were very shootable and will make fine plinking loads. No complaints with them. :fire

Next will be to get the right height rings for the scope and start dialing in some hunting loads with the 400gr bullets. They're not quite the movers that the 300s were, but I have a feeling that based on today's results, the accuracy will be very nice.

I run 300gr Nosler Combined Technology bullets in my .45-70 over 55.5gr of 4198 for my marlin guide gun. Runs 2350fps or so. Absolutely brutal round.

Brutal on both ends or at the terminus?
