22lr rifle Reviews; CZ 452 vs Ruger 10/22 vs Armscor AK22

Post by drjoker »

CZ 452 (***** out of *****); Buttery smooth bolt that locks tight. Working the bolt with thumb and trigger finger while firing with the middle finger, I can fire that gun almost as fast as a semi-auto. It is very accurate, shooting offhand, rapid fire sub 1 inch groups at 25 yards. Being bolt action, it never jams, either. If there is a bad round, no problem, just work the bolt another time to cycle through the bad round and fire the next round. If I could only have one rimfire gun, this would be it. Trigger is nice and crisp.

Ruger 10/22 (**** out of *****); Doesn't jam with any ammo. However, if there is a bad round, it is a bit harder to clear the bad round compared with the CZ 452. The 10 round magazines don't stick out of the gun so that you can hold the rifle with your off hand closer to the body for a more stable stance. This is an advantage over the CZ, which only holds 5 rounds with its flush magazine. What I don't like about this gun is that the sights are kinda rudimentary with way too much space between the side posts and the center post. This makes it hard to aim with precision. I get 2 inch groups at 25 yards from a prone position with no sling, no sandbag, no gloves, no jacket, and no bipod (aka the naked prone position). Trigger is nice and crisp.

Armscor AK 22 (** out of *****); Gun jams every other shot with Remington Golden Bullets. Guns shoots well with CCI mini mags, Federal Bulk, and Federal Auto Match. Gun shoots most accurately with CCI Mini Mags. Shooting from naked prone position, I get 3 inch groups at 25 yards. The iron sights are kinda sucky, but not as sucky as the Ruger 10/22 sights. Trigger has some slop and mush before it goes bang. It is not a very accurate gun. The owner's manual is unintelligible. You have to rely on Youtube to teach you how to field strip and clean the gun. The gun is designed by Neanderthals. It requires 3 screwdrivers and 2 different types of screwdrivers to field strip the gun.

As I figured. CZ's are the quiet target heroes of the .22 rifle world. Ruger 10/22s are like Glocks, there is so much aftermarket support that you can build them into anything (I've even seen weird antiaircraft type guns).

I've got a CZ452FS and shoot it fairly regularly. The only thing I don't like is the blade sight, and that's just me and my eyes. I've since replaced it with a peep-style sight and it works better for me. Everyone is right, though: it is a shooter. I'm a 1.5MOA shooter with anything and this rifle will easily do that. The bolt and trigger just keep getting better over time.

Range trip with Pappy Garand.

Top two shots first, readjust point of aim, then bottom three. Pretty darned good for a 22 at 100 yards using irons off sand bags.

Here she is a little while later with some glass.

No surprise the CZ rifles work great.

 Yugos are the exception to the old "looks like a duck" adage. Yugo, looks like a car, sounds like a car, etc. but isn't really.

CZ rifles are one of the better-kept secrets in the target rifle world, at lease in the US. That's unfortunate, because it's an excellent rifle. They sell a special "combo" rifle that shoots 22LR and (with quick barrel change - included with the rifle), 17 HMR.

I think that one of the issues they have is that they're a bit more pricey than most of the others. However, you do get what you pay for as it pertains to both accuracy and the wood/fit/finish. I've tweaked my wife's REM 597 and it's great, but it can't touch my CZ out of the box.
Cheers!
