For The Military Folks Out There...
Just some info. We obviously get the discount, $70.00. What we are not told is that you will need to substantiate your service. Your ID card will not meet the requirement. I got a letter saying I needed to submit either and LES or orders to my present duty station. I could not find this anywahere, and instead of arguing about it, I faxed and mailed it to them. A friend of mine called and asked about including it in the original packet and he was told "No" just wait until you get the letter from us. Not sure if it is a time stalling tactic or not, but I thought I would share.

LES
I sent a copy of my most current LES and a front/back copy of my ID card with my packet and a check for $70. I got my plastic on time and never heard anything about it. If you are AF, you can also go on Virtual MPF and print a "proof of service letter". The lady at the CHL class was adamant about "PCS orders only" which I had no idea where they were and didn't feel like the hassle of tracking them down through MPF or my garage, so I sent ID card/LES anyway and it worked with no problems. Good luck!
I found the Lord again--although he never lost me!
Finding a copy of our orders shouldn't be that difficult. Your orderly room (CSS) should have a copy in your PIF. I see you don't really need it now and I do appreciate the info from both of you. Maybe this will help for others.
I personally don't see why an ID card/LES/Proof of Service letter aren't enough but...

From the looks of your addresses you guys ought to do this over coffee.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

I got my CHL shortly after the military rates went into effect. I called the state office and was told I needed "copies of the orders putting me on active duty" (like I can find paperwork from 1994 after all the moves I've made! - I used my PCS orders), a letter from my commander (who is at Andrews AFB - I got my civilian supervisor who also happens to be guard to write one), copy of my ID (which at the time was the older style that said 'Active Duty' in contrasting 1" high block letters
). I though it sounded more like what they would need from a reservist who had been activated. I also threw in the letter from vMPF (mentioned above). I guess I gave them enough, they took my money and sent me my plastic!
As an aside, if anyone here works at JSC and has access to Mission Control, I'm pinning on Colonel next Thursday, 31 May, at 16:00. Drop on by the old Apollo Control Room. PM me for details.

Doesnt the law state something to the effect of current military as well as those honorably discharged within the last 365 days shall have all fees waived. I was released( i still sigh of relief when i say that) last November. I mailed them a copy of my DD-214 in with my packet, although they didnt ask. I will keep everyone updated on what crazy letters they mail me.

Yes, honorably discharged within the last year your fee to the state is $0. After one year, it is $70 (half price)getusumtx wrote:Maybe I miss understood what you fellas are talking about. My CHL instructor said they needed the DD214 to prove the honorable discharge. What branch were you in and for how long. Retired AF here.

I can't find anything about this in my DPS handbook on Texas Concealed Handgun Laws, but that is not unusual. Perhaps it is just too old (like me).
Is there a reduced rate for a veteran's renewal? If so, what is the cost to her?
Tks,
Jim
