I thought they were pushing it as a means to cheaper "meat"? I mean at some point, we'll run out of land to grow food... We might as well develop the technologies to overcome the issue while the need is non-urgent so we don't mess it up when the time comes (I draw the line at eating insects, though )

Hopefully, that time will be a long way off, but admittedly it may not. The population growth trendlines over the last 1,000 years worldwide on a bar graph looks like a 90% flat line with only a gentle upward gradient until you hit the 20th century were it shoots up to almost completely vertical. In the meantime, fortunately, I still have the capability to grow most of my own meat and harvest some of the rest, so I'll pass on any synthetic meats until absolutley necessary.
