Opinions on Book - "After You Shoot"

I bought this book from my CHL instructor and read it cover to cover.

I ended up on the "There's been a shooting" side of the fence when making the 911 call.

In a stressful highly charged situation I am not sure I couldn't be tricked into or accidently say the wrong thing so I think it's best to say this and this alone and wait for counsel.

I have not yet consulted a 'pro CHL attorney' in the Dallas area and am open to suggestions.

read it a few months back. makes some very good points but for me it was much more about what your rights and actions *should* be as opposed to what they really are. he makes the point that cops get different treatment post-shooting than the rest of us based on nothing more than ignorance which is true and wrong, but for me forcing the issue wouldn't be worth it. a a good read though, overall.

I just finished Andrew Branca's book Laws of Self Defense and it's a *must read*. he does a superb job of laying out the reality of the legal system and exactly what to expect in laymans terms. how things will be interpreted, how certain actions turn into pros/cons for you and he also provides state specific details when they apply. I'm very likely going to buy a stack of these and give them to my CHL students as part of the course. I've never seen a more practical and useful guide to self defense laws before.

I'm not affiliated with Branca in any way. I saw the book advertised (on this forum), bought it, and read it. that's the extent of my knowledge of Branca. The same applies to Korwin as well.

Charles Cotton (the owner of TexasCHLForum, and the guy who actually wrote a good portion of the Texas CHL law) occasionally teaches a "use of deadly force in Texas" seminar around the state, and you would be very well served to attend one if he ever comes your way to teach one. Not taking anything away from this book's author, but there just isn't anybody in the State of Texas who knows more about this part of the law than Charles. He spends a decent amount of the seminar time on the "after you shoot" part of the equation.

I've attended this seminar twice, and if he were in my area more frequently, I'd attend it more frequently just to keep myself up to speed on these things. I can't say enough good things about it, and you really should go to one if you have the opportunity.

Here's the thing, if you could get enough people in your area interested in attending, you might be able to bend Charles' ear to do another on. Perhaps if a local coalition of CHL instructors were to organize such an event, it might work well. Just a thought. I don't presume to speak for Charles.
