I have a couple of buddies that were in the last CHL Instructor class, and they said they were told that there are over 750K CHLs issued in the great state of Texas.

Well, that is not factual. As of end of 2012, there were 584,850 active license Texas CHL licenses. I doubt there have not been over 165K licenses issued since then. Still, it's a good start.

I wasn't in the class, but they both reported that same number to me, separately. So either the DPS instructors are inflating numbers, or the frenzy that started in December of last year really has produced that many more CHL licenses issued.
Is there anywhere to check current stats besides the DPS "Calendar Year" report on their website?
