Austin....please Post best new price or new sales on ammo

Post by daddySEAL »

I'm burning up ammo, at a ferocious rate...because I, my fiancé and 4 young adult children go to a great little firing range to practise nearly ever weekend near Austin. I am acquiring the reloading equipment and studying up on the safe correct procedures to reuse casing and cut the cost as much as I can.

Hi Guys,
(Please post/reply when anyone hears of a new sale or extra low price on ammo.) I don't like mail ordering, because of weight shipping costs.

But I own a "pretty good collection" (10) of semi-auto pistols that are ALL .40 caliber. So that's the caliber I'm personally looking for to stockpile practice ammo and reload also. For self-defense, I'm set on self-defense ammo and never will use reloads for those.

But I'd like to ask all other members to help me here and post retail outlet sales on .40 cal. FMJ ammo to pick up in person to buy in medium quantities, when they occur. OR out of state mailorder sales that shipping is not as much as in-state 8.75% taxes we pay.

Wal-Mart currently has Winchester white box 180 grain FMJ .40 cal. 50 rd. boxes for about $12.75. anyone know of a better price on that brand or other quality reloadable 180 .40 cal ammo, please?

(and please reply/post any time anyone finds low prices or sales....to keep this info going)

thanks, everyone!

Academy sporting goods often has prices on WWB 9mm that beat WalMart, with occasional sales, so you might check them out for .40 S&W.

Their website currently is showing a Remington Mega-Pack (250 rounds) of .40 S&W for $59.87, which is a little cheaper per round than what you're using now . . . can't say how good the brass is. (Ammo price increases during the last year or two are shocking, and have GREATLY outpaced inflation.)

Where's the "great little firing range" you use near Austin? :?:

It's called "Eagle Peak" in the countryside outside of Leander, HankB.

All of my pistols are .40 cal. S&W, as I mentioned.
I bought a 250 round box of those Remingtons you mentioned at Academy. They seemed OK, but whatever I get HAS to be good brass for many reloads.

Thanks for the word on Academy.

If you want my $0.02, don't shy away from the Remington UMC 250-packs. I get those all the time (just yesterday, in fact) and have had not one single jam in, I'd say, 2000 to 2500 shots. $59.99 (give or take $0.50) is what I paid, but only about 6 months ago, I paid $49.99, which was nice.

Wal-Mart also has that same Winchester ammo in a 100-pack for $20, thus saving you $5.50/box if you're intent on buying Winchester.

Some Wal-Marts carry Brass Blazers. They are cheaper practice ammo.
Also, Academy carries a brass Monarch that is good for target shooting.

I haven't heard whether or not the brass is good or bad for reloading on either.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

one of my prime concerns is the Quality of the brass for multiple reloading.

Does Remington have the same quality durability for reloading longevity safely as Winchester?

For most cartridges I reload, Remington brass seems to be as good as any . . . the notable exception being .45 ACP. I've encountered several batches of Remington .45 ACP in which the brass is several thousandths of an inch thinner than any other brand . . . this prevents me from sizing the cases down enough to get a good, firm, grip on the bullet.

Not having a .40, I've no idea how different brands of .40 cases compare.

Venus Pax,
Yes, I've heard of those and seen both in stores, but .40 S&W ammo that are the best for Reloading are the Only ones I'm interested in buying/using.

thanks

I'd reconsider mail order, too. I usually buy FMJ practice ammo a case at a time at the minimum, and online ordering wins out on price most of the time. Shipping from out-of-state is typically less than local sales tax for me (8.75%). I don't buy .40s, though, so can't help with example prices. I can say that my last purchase was two cases of .45 ACP Sellier & Bellot from Sportsman's Guide. I paid 21.8 cents per round and $9.99 shipping ($19.99 minus a $10 coupon; you get a discount coupon from them shipped in each order); so my net cost was 22.3 cents per round.

Skiprr,
So thats like about a savings of 2 or 3 cents a round?
How do Sellier & Bellot compare to the US brands of Winchester and Remington for shooting....AND RELOADING DURABILITY. Please?

How many rounds do you buy mail order in each shipment, please?

(I only shoot FMJ too)

Can't give you specifics on 40 S&W cases but in 45 acp, I find no trouble reloading Win White Box, Rem UMC, S&B, IMI, Fed, Speer, NYY, ACC Match, Fiochi(sp) and several other headstamps over and over again. Generally I discard a case because it has been damaged (either by someones gun or being stepped on) not overused. I am a range brass scrounger and pick up ALL 45 acp cases I see and sort them at home.

The only brass cases I avoid are Win NT and certain Speer cases as they use small Pistol primers instead of large and anything that is berdan primed.

I pounce on Nickel Plated like a hungry cat.

Does your WalMart not carry the Blazer Brass ammo? It goes for $9.27 per box (50) here in DFW.

Gotta defer to Jeremae about the reloading. I've just never talked myself into getting started with it. Maybe someday, but I already feel like I run a steady two hours behind on every 24-hour day, so don't know how I'd ever fit in time.

I keep a spreadsheet where I keep the specifics every time I price or purchase ammo. (For us non-reloaders, that might make an interesting project for an interactive database for someone who knows how to do that.) In the spreadsheet, I break the cost down to a price-per-round so I can accurately compare actual cost. When I find what I think is a good deal, I buy at least one case (1,000 round), most often two. I really only keep track of .45 ACP and 9mm in FMJ unless I'm shopping for a specific need, like a class not long ago in Dallas where I needed almost a case of .223.

I know some folks aren't very found of Sellier & Bellot ammo, but I've always had good luck with it in the calibers I shoot. Their Website is http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/. It's new-production produced in the Czech Republic; company's been around for 181 years. It's brass, boxer-primed, and has a distinctive red seal on the primer. I understand the primers to be a little harder than normal, but in a few thousand rounds down, that hasn't caused me any problems in my guns...except in a Kel-Tech P3AT where the primers sometimes failed to ignite, but I honestly don't think that's as much the ammo as the pistol. From an anecdotal quality standpoint, I'd put S&B and Winchester WB on par, with the S&B shooting a little cleaner.

I don't have any .40 S&W guns, so I don't know what prices are like for it, but...

If I want to buy ammo in large quantities and don't want to pay for shipping for all of it, there's a place in Brenham called Ammunition To Go that I'll drive out to and pick it up in person. It's a mainly internet order shop, but they welcome people that want to come out and pick it up in person. It's nothing fancy... basically a big detached garage and some sheds full of ammo, but they have decent prices. I go there when I want to buy a couple of cases of 7.62x54R surplus ammo. It's not very far from Austin, and the gas cost is much cheaper than paying for shipping elsewhere. That, and the Blue Bell creamery is right there, so you can take the tour and eat some ice cream if you want. ;-)

Here's their page for 40 S&W ammo:

http://ammunitiontogo.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23_71

Click on FMJ or Hollow point, and you'll get a good list of ammo. If you buy it by the case (1000 rounds), their Fiocchi FMJ ammo comes out to 11.74/box. Most of the other ammo they carry comes out to about what you're paying now... Remington 180grn. FMJ comes out to $12.74/box if bought in quantities of 1000. They do have some Wolf ammo that's steel-cased that comes out to $9.94/box when bought by the case, but that's obviously not reloadable.

I normally buy Winchester FMJ .40 S&W ammo for the range [$20/box at Walmart], but this time, they were out of stock. I instead bought Blazer Brass. It was a nice pretty box that got my attention, and it was the only other ammo that was cheaper. The guy said it was pretty good for the range, but I may have to clean my gun more often. I bought a box of 50 rounds for a little over $9.. not bad. I'll give it a go.

I don't really buy the Remington because they are more expensive [250rd for $60].. but which is better.. Winchester or Remington? Is anyone particular to either, and why? [Also, has anyone tried out this Blazer Brass?]

I'm going to the range tomorrow, so I'll be firing off all of it, but as inexperienced as I am, I won't be able to tell a big difference between them. Opinions appreciated!
