Auto Knife (Switchblade) Recommendations?

Post by HankB »

Well, now that as of Sept 1 automatic knives - switchblades - are legal in Texas, I think I'd like to get one for every day carry. I mostly carry a CRKT M16-03 so something very generally the same size would be ideal . . . single edged so it's not a "dagger" and with a practical length blade, say 3" - 4" or so.

I'm not interested in fancy engraving or a fancy "name" on the knife, just functional, well made, and with good steel . . . not some $20 Chinese junk.

Suggestions and sources?
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Try looking around on Blade HQ.

I bought one from them last month, but I got a rather inexpensive one. Still works good though.

Just picked up a S&W M&P autoknife MOdel 1600 from GT Distributors in Austin.
Very nice and smooth action - instinctive lock and safety - made in USA.

They have locations in Dallas and Rossville too:

If I could find one, this is what I would get. Spyderco Citadel. Unfortunately they are no longer being made.

Another vote for benchmade.

The one pictured above is a 9050 AFO. It was my favorite knife until mine was stolen from me. I now carry this.

I found a used one here on the forum. CleverNickname was selling a Benchmade HK 14850 Epidemic double-action out-the-front switchblade.

I settled on the Gerber Covert Auto. Slim and easy fit in the pocket.

Hopefully someone remembers to inform Texas LEOs. I think most of them still believe churches are off limits for CC.

Isn't it the case that an OTF has to be a single-edged blade and not a "dagger" style (with both sides sharpened)? If yes those are few & far between afaict.

I don't think that's the case that "those are few and far between". Most of the blades of folders, fixed blade and automatic knives have a "false edge" and are not be classified as daggers.

I never really considered an OTF until I read this thread. Since I am left-handed, I like the fact that they are ambidextrous.
