Can I carry on a bus

Post by WyattP »

Here's a CHL carry question for the experts. I play baseball at a big university in Texas and was wondering what are the laws regarding a bus carry? Let's say I were to avoid getting on the bus from any school parking lots (i.e. I walk along the road and just hop on cause our bus parks on a public street), could I carry on the bus. Also the bus is not a yellow school. bus it's a Coach bus paid for by the University. I'm assuming the answer is no. But what do you guys say?

No.
PC §46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, club, or prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):
(1) on the physical premises of a school or educational institution, any grounds or building on which an activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or educational institution, whether the school or educational institution is public or private, unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the institution;
Just plain no...

Off topic... I read your thread title and immediately thought...

Can I carry on a bus?
Can I carry and can Gus?
Can I carry? Yes I can.
I can carry (OD) green eggs and ham.

I agree with Roy and I think the answer is the same if the school charters a bus, a van, or a stretch limousine. On the other hand, a city bus should be legal for CHL. Same for Greyhound or megabus long haul bus rides, even if the entire team was going on spring break together.

If it's a bus chartered/paid-for by the school, you cannot carry.
If it's a school-sponsored activity where public transportation is being used, you cannot carry.

Also for further down the road:

You wouldn't be able to carry into a building (locker room, gym, etc).
You wouldn't be able to carry into any stadiums where your games are being played.

However, you're not restricted in school parking lots - the "public path" you mention is unnecessary... That is, you can carry at a university as long as you're not entering a building or a bus (as mentioned above).
