Re: Back Up Gun vs Tactical Blade
Let me be completely candid here:
I would love to attact ANY of you to our Austin Combatives & Self-Defense practices (or special events but I care more about regular sessions).
We do meet in Austin Mon 6:30, Wed 6:30, Sat 9am and you can keep up with our schedule by joining our meetup http://www.Meetup.Com/AustinCombatives" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
We are actually in a gym up in Round Rock now despite the name of our group. I make NOTHING on this training (in fact I spend a little bit to make it happen.) It is completely free to TRY our practice the first couple of times, and I will promise you will learn a LOT, no matter what your experience or prior training, in just two sessions.
(There is a small fee, $40, to the gym if you decide you love it and wish to keep attending. No contract, honor system, no hassle.)
Our group is NOT unique in this TYPE of practice (although we like to think we do it better than everyone else :) ). There are groups like ours in Salada, Ft. Worth, Waco, College Station, in other Texas locations, and in other states. For while, at least, we even had a branch in Afghanistan (and I have the T-Shirt to prove it -- really.)
If you think your are older or not athletic enough for our practice just come on out. I can tailor this for ANYONE with any degree of fitness or willingness to engage.
Personally, I myself am 61 years old with significant systemic arthritis and almost no knees left. However if I get attacked BECAUSE the criminals see me limping across a parking lot and assume that I am easy target then I MUST PROTECT MYSELF and MY FAMILY.
For those who want to engage physically, we can teach you a LOT about REALLY FUNCTIONALIZE whatever combat arts training you already have and help you acquire as much as you wish that actually works.
We don't do calisthenics, 'exercises' (except demos for you to take home IF you wish to do those), nor kata or forms. We don't have grade belts, ranks, uniforms nor bowing. You call me Herb, and if you practice with us you will almost certainly become our close friend.
I am very proud to say that right here in Austin we have invented a DISARMING SYSTEM (for knives and other weapons) that is better than ANYTHING ever seen before in any martial art in the world, in any book, or video training: Principle Based Disarming Chains don't use technique so much as a technique GENERATOR based on learning the principles of all good disarms.
If you want to learn the Disarm System or anything else that will help you survive a mugging then I will be happy to to work with you.
I do prefer that everyone learn the Avoiding Criminal Attacks -- it isn't physical and it only take a bit of practice to functionalize.
Notice that word 'functionalize' -- we disdain ANY technique or method that isn't functional, i.e., effective in a real situation, for YOU. It matters not if an instructor or senior students can perform some technique if the majority of those practicing cannot quickly learn to do it and make it work against real opposition.
We do HAVE FUN. However, our MAIN GOAL is learning to: "Go Home Safe" (from criminal attacks.)
If you are interested then please let me know.
If not then PLEASE LET me know how I could interest more people in actually practicing to use their skills and firearms effectively.
There is a discussion over on http://www.CombativesTrainingGroup.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; about people who buy fancy gear without being willing to train and TEST if it is effective.
How do we know that most stuff out there isn't effective? Because we TRY IT under full pressure (as realistic as we can safely manage) using oppositional testing in the gym and force-on-force at various special events or ranges.
We quite simply let a guy with a safety knife try to rob us and see what happens while participants try to get their firearm out and into use WITHOUT receiving "wounds" that would put them in the hospital or morgue for an extended stay.
How do we find out what WORKS? Same way. How do we find out it works FOR US and not just Chuck Norris or some dude on TV? Same way. We try it.
[Caveat: There is NEVER going to be totally realistic training. Even if we used live ammo or had real duels those would be artificial just by the fact that we had to show up to a certain place and at a certain time to try it. We accept that and work to make WHAT WE DO as realistic as feasible while maintaining safety. We DO MOVE and SHOOT at some ranges. We do shoot each other with Airsoft -- not in some paintball game but in realistically chosen scenarios. Nothing wrong with paintball nor IDPA but those are OTHER activities which some of us enjoy but which don't substitute for force on force practice.]
We don't endlessly practice things we already know how to do -- we CONCENTRATE on the (next) skills that will increase our survival chances. That might be different for you than for me -- you may be physically more capable than me or I may have a different body and physical capability than you. We must tailor this to each of us.
One of my signatures reads: Fight your strengths; Train your weaknesses.
BTW, this works just fine for women. Bring your wife, sister or mother (really.)
While I cannot speak for the other groups completely; our Austin training works for all ADULTS. (I will consider mature youngsters if a parent/guardian is PRACTICING and monitoring what is being practiced. We are practicing using deadly and other serious force so you must filter that for you kids.)
Call me even if you don't live nearby and wish to understand this type of practice further: 512 761 5412 or email: AustinCombatives@GMail.com
And yes, if you can't make regular practice or happen to just be in town for one day I LOVE TO TRAIN and will generally do my best to meet you if you contact me. (FYI: I have been known to meet at MIDNIGHT to train with an enthusiastic partner who was a shift worker and didn't have a better time.) No promises but best effort, time and energy permitting.
Remember: If you aren't training you aren't improving.
