Alessi Holster experience

Post by Kenk »

Last fall I sold my Kahr CM9 and replaced it with a new S&W 642 for concealed carry. I wanted to find an IWB holster that would work in the appendix position. I’m an older guy with a slender build. A person on this forum had an Alessi Deep Cover holster that looked like it would fit the bill.

I called Alessi for more information and talked with Tom Kulwicki, the President. He was very helpful and suggested that I consider 3 holsters….the APX, the Talon, and the Deep Cover. He mentioned that the Deep Cover was designed for undercover LEO’s, sits low, and is difficult for some less experienced people to get a proper grip on the stock when drawing. He thought I should probably choose one of the other two. I ended up ordering a Deep Cover anyway because I thought it would conceal better.

I waited about 5 weeks for the Deep Cover before it arrived. I tried it for a few weeks. Although it was very comfortable and well concealed, it was difficult for me to consistently get a good grip when I practiced drawing. I called Alessi and spoke with Tom again. He was very sympathetic and didn’t say “I told you so” but that was the essence of the conversation. He then volunteered that he would make one APX and one Talon for me, ship them to me at no upfront cost, let me “test drive” them, and then I could return the holster(s) I didn’t want, and pay for any I wanted to keep. I was very pleasantly surprised with Tom’s offer and accepted it.

About a month later, I received the two holsters. The APX is designed specifically for appendix carry. The Talon is really meant for carry around the hip. They both position the revolver higher above the top of my pants/belt, making for an easier draw. The bottom of the APX sits higher than the Deep Cover, making it more comfortable when sitting down. Also, because of the placement of the clip, there is less of a bulge in my waistband. I decided to keep the APX and also the Deep Cover, and return the Talon since I have no interest in carrying at the hip.

I’m including a couple of pictures of the three holsters. The APX is on the left, the Deep Cover in the middle, and the Talon on the right. I’ve tried to line them up so the clips are all at the same height. All three are very nicely made, molded to fit the J frame 642 perfectly, and are made of very thin but substantial leather. The clip works either under or over my belt, so I can use them without a belt if needed.

I know this is a bit lengthy, but I wanted to report my experiences with Alessi and more specifically with Tom Kulwicki. It’s obvious that a quality product and customer service are very high on their priority list.

Well the real problem was me. I found that even after about 350 rounds through the CM9 I was still experiencing some failures....not many, but enough to make me question carrying it for SD. My grip is just not strong enough to deal with the recoil and the short 2 finger stock....call it limp wristing I guess. The 642 is just about guarantied to go bang when I pull the trigger. I really wanted the CM9 to work, but I just couldn't depend on it. I also have a K9 and I have had no problems with it malfunctioning....I guess the extra weight and stock/grip length makes the difference.

Nice pics of the leather. I can see where the Deep Cover would sit so low to make a problem of a good draw. Alessi holsters are nice. I had a Talon II that I used to conceal a G20 with. They are definitely worth the money.

Here it is, one year + later. Last week I traded in my Kahr K9 at McBrides on a S&W Model 60-14, 357 Magnum with 2 1/8 inch barrel. As I've gotten older, I was having more difficulty racking the slide on the K9 and questioned if I could reliably react to a malfunction.

I'm still carrying the 642 in the Alessi APX holster. It is very comfortable. The Model 60 is about 1/2 pound heavier and therefore not quite as comfortable, but it is much more "pleasant" to shoot than the 642 :-)

Now all I have to do is dispose of the 3 K9 holsters and ammo since I no longer have a 9mm pistol.

Tom has been a good friend to me for years. Very easy to work with and very honest.

I have always bought there CQC-S holsters.

Since I just purchased a Sig P938, I'll have to order another Alessi APX to fit it. I need to give Tom a call to make sure that they make the APX for that pistol.

I have a Talon Plus from the Kahr K9 I no longer own (which I need to sell). The Sig kinda fits....better than no holster at all ;-)

I did order an APX for my P938. Alessi is quoting a 4 month wait, so I should see it in March. A long wait but I'm sure it will be worth it. I was able to find a new owner for the Talon from my K9.

It's good to see that Alessi's business must be doing well based on the wait. They make an outstanding product.
