Looks like you found a solution but I and several of my buddies have used the Ruger 10 - 22 for our kids. It is relatively small frame, very reliable, user friendly, and a very well made weapon that will last a lifetime.

10-22 is the way I went with my boys. Several years later they still love shooting it.
