Android Questions

Post by G26ster »

I have a LG Android 4G smartphone I've had for about a year or so. Lately it has taken to turn the screen on randomly while in my pocket. I have the screen timeout set for 10 minutes, and always ensure the screen is off before putting it in my pocket. But for the last few weeks, I have found the screen on while in my pocket and it is killing the battery fast. I have checked and it is not due to any pressure I am putting on a switch (at the top) to turn the screen on. I have found it has done the same loosely held in a shirt pocket. Any clues as to how to solve this?

Also, what is the difference between "Cell standby" and "Phone idle?" Both total times are listed in the "what is using the battery" section of my phone.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check for software updates under phone settings. You may be a few behind if you never updated.

Have you cycled the power lately?

Turn it off and turn it back on.

No place to check for updates that I can find in the settings.

Yes, numerous times. I also notice that it likes to reboot itself randomly too. Not a complete re-boot though. Drops off line and comes back up rather quickly, but has to regain network and other add-ons that appear when the phone is fully booted (volume locker, mobile security, local temperature, etc.)

If you have an SD card in it, remove it and run without it for a while. It might be going bad and the phone might think its getting removed and reinserted.

Why is you screen timeout 10minutes???

Sorry, it's 2 minutes. My bad. Will try removing the card.

You've probably got a rogue app that is waking up the phone with push notifications. Look for something called "Addons Detector" and run a scan to see what's found. If you have kids playing with the phone it's very likely they've installed some unwanted apps. Even if you don't have kids it's easy to get sucked in, it's a good idea to read reviews on the apps before installing. Google does not control "Play" nearly as well as Apple monitors theirs.

Try >settings>about phone>system/software updates. If this
Doesn't get you there let me know model.

Cheers!

What ^^^^ said about an app that is causing it. Any apps that you installed around the time noticed the problem? You can start uninstalling or just killing the process for apps until you notice it is gone.

Thanks for the advice.

Nothing in the "About Phone" list allows me to select anything. Just lists info. Phone is an LG Connect MS840.

All seems to be back to normal now. Last night this thing went bonkers. Constant restarting itself, lost 4G service and went to EV or +1 service, could call in but not out. When trying to dial out got error message "Activity dialer not responsive," etc. Woke up this AM and all appears to be back to normal - "so far."

Last night I uninstalled all recent app updates that I could, and eliminated some useless apps.

I don't know if this is common to the Android system, but some Google apps cannot be stopped. You can stop them, but they start right back up. (i.e Google Play Services). Also many apps (pre-loaded with phone) cannot be uninstalled. I know zilch about smart phones, obviously.

I'll keep watch on this phone, but if it acts up again, it'll be history. I never really cared for it anyway.

Bummer! No over the air updates on this one. You can download software and check it with a USB PC connection.

Here's the link.

What does downloading the USB Driver to my PC do for me? It's the only download I see under the "Software Update" tab.

Once the USB drivers are installed on your pc, when you run the program with your phone plugged in it should check for software updates automatically. This is an older process. Most phones today do it over the air under settings. You could skip all this with a quick visit to your Metro PCS store.

Thanks. About 7 or 8 months ago I got a text telling me to go to the nearest corporate Metro PCS store for a software upgrade. I did, and no more since. I think my next visit to Metro PCS will be for a different phone. I really don't like many of the features on this one.
