My dad gave me his Marlin M60 on Saturday. It had a really nasty FTE while out on his place shooting and in short "you can have it, fix it or sell it." I dont want to sell it because its a really fun shooting rifle, I know what I need to do to get it functioning properly just cant make it happen. One of my dad's brother in laws gave it to him and thats all the history I know about it. Neither are really into firearms and one look at the rifle you can see its dirty.
My problem comes with the front screw on the bottom of the stock that I need to take out to break it down. It wouldn't budge with the screwdriver. Tried some different penetrating oils and nothing. Upon closer inspection it appeared to be clued in somehow. I heated the screw up with my soldering iron for about a minute and i was able to get one turn. I've used vise grips and I cant back it out any further. I've even tried some acetone down there and heating it up more, but its being stubborn.
I'm out of ideas on how to get this screw out, so I'm turning here for some advice. Thanks in advance.

Try tapping lightly while turning with a screwdriver. Put the gun in a vise or, have someone hold it while you turn while tapping on the screwdriver handle. Time and patience will win out.

The screw should be easily removed. Perhaps someone put some Loctite on it. There's also the possibility it's not the original screw. The Model 60 probabbly has more information available than any othe .22 semi-auto except perhaps the Ruger 10/22.budroux2w wrote:My dad gave me his Marlin M60 on Saturday. Thank you for the replies. I don't have a vise, but can probably get one so I'll try that. I'll also take a look at the forums Puma mentioned. Crazy how defeated one little screw will make you feel.

Lacking the proper tools and technique can be a deal breaker. I had one that defied all logic and effort to remove. I took it to a local machine shop and they got it out in less than a minute. I bought lunch for the guy because he wouldn't take any payment.

Maybe someone cross-threaded the screw? It may be that you'll have to have it drilled out, and then tap or helicoil the hole to accept another screw. I used to sell the tooling for this type of stuff a long time ago, but it has been so long that I don't remember that much about it.
