Austin Gunsmith Recommendation?

Post by HankB »

I have a couple of specific jobs I'd like to have done right, and would like to know if anyone can recommend a gunsmith in the Austin, TX area who'd do these jobs properly:

1. Thread muzzle on an AWB-era Bushmaster XM15E2 for a muzzle brake. Maybe also replace the front sight base with one that has the bayonet lug, but I've heard the taper pins are hard to get right . . .

2. As above, but on a DSA StG-58 rifle, to take a FAL muzzle brake.

3. Replace the barrel on an M1 Garand . . . I've got a Field Grade from the CMP, and I need someone who'll index and headspace a replacement properly.
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

One of the best precision gunsmiths around is Benny Hill in Corpus Christi, which is a bit of a drive from Austin. He has the skills and equipment to do what you need. Triangle Shooting Sports is his company.

Let me know how the Garand turns out. I've got some woodless Danes that have sewer pipes for barrels. Thanks

Here are two in South Austin
Hank Fleming @

John Hansen
Hansen Precision Gunsmith
6417 Billy Bonney Pass
Austin 78749

512-301-1844

Had some minor work done with Hank Fleming. Good job fair price and nice to deal with.

With John Hansen, never had any work done but did several FFL transactions. I was impressed with his professionalism and courtesy and fair prices.
