CheaperThanDirt? Whatever!

Post by age_ranger »

Just thumbed through the latest flier from CheaperThanDirt. Cheaper Than What? Hello.............!!! 9mm WWB is going for $13.35/50 rounds!! That must be some expensive dirt they're shoveling!! I kheard prices on the Winchester and Federal stuff is going up again. I'm hoping this ad reflects that raise in price. Funny, I used to go there and think I was really getting a bargain. The only thing I go in for now is to cruise the consignment case and look at new models so I can go buy elsewhere.

CheaperThanSome might be a better name................

Yeah, their prices have gone up enough of late that I don't even check them unless it is an off the wall item.

Have you priced their new handguns and rifles? I saw some last week that were $100-$200 high!

I don't buy from CheaperThanDirt for two reasons . . .

1. Being in Texas, I get nicked for sales tax as well as shipping.

2. Several years ago I ordered from them when they had some sort of promotion going on where you'd get some "free" stuff . . . I got my order, but not the promotional items. When I called, they flippantly said "Oh, I guess we ran out, but we'll be getting more in."

When I asked if they'd be shipping me the promotional items when more arrived, they laughed and told me they would . . . if I placed another order!

And then they hung up on me.

I don't deal with companies that swindle me - and laugh about it. :mad5

ok, this is good to hear. I was thinking I was the only one who thought their stuff was a little high at times. I've ordered from them quite a bit.

I think i mainly like the catalog being mailed. If i actually want something I try to grab it at Top Brass or another local store.

The odd thing of it all is that the prices in the store for the same item in the catalog are often higher. I was told that the catalog dept sells form a counter in the back of the store and that the retail store was seperate???

<insert confusion here>

I've bought two or three pistols form them and looking back, prices were high, but I had decided on the purchase before going. My bad......they had taken a mag out of the box on one and had it in a bag for sale for $29. Talk about your all time low slaes tactics. On top of that, I found out my pistol was an LE model and not supposed to be for civilian sales (yet). So, they were getting in LEO pistols, taking out one of the mags and jacking up the price. (Because the law enforcement pistols ship first to fill orders) So, now they're taking away form our law enforcement community to boot.

I've banned them from my greenbacks. I can support my claims with proof if needed, but my best advice is to steer clear of them unless it's a killer deal or you just can't live without it.

Well, yes and no.
Some of the items I've bought from them in the last year:

SKS Yugo (2), excellent condition, teak stocks $99 and $149. They are out of stock now, or I'd buy another.
Heritage .22LR/Mag revolver (used) $99.95
S&W M10 police trade-in $189.95

Oh yeah, they have a sale every Thursday- Tuesday, posted in the ST sports section, and also at the store. Recent sale items:
Springfield XD 45 $319
S&W Sigma 9mm $299
Charles Daly Hi-Power $299 (!)
CZ52 Tokarev $139.95

Their gun prices are generally a bit high, about equal to Cabelas, but there are some bargains to be had. Their NAA minis seem to be below market price. I am shopping those now, and so far I haven't beat their price. Those things may be the most expensive handgun, by the pound!

I have never been impressed with their ammo prices, but they have a good selection and I've bought because they had what I wanted, or a new variety that interested me. For bulk ammo I buy reloads from someone I trust.

As for the internet sales, they claim it's a separate business and "nothing to do with the retail op". Yet they have a catalog sales desk at the back that is open Friday afternoon and Saturday AM. You wan walk up and buy anything from the catalog at the prices listed. No freight, but of course sales tax.

well, since we're talking about retailers... anyone have any experience with Carter Country locations? That's what I normally buy weapons from as they're right around the corner and usually have a "good old boy" kinda guy behind the counter.

Was funny last time i went in there though. The guy behind the counter didnt know how to take down a 24/7. had to show him the trick to the pin.

The last firearm I bought at Carter's Country was a Ruger Vaquero for Cowboy Action shooting, years ago. The price marked on it was high - but when I said my friend had just bought one like it for $X, the salesman immediately came down to $X for it - and I bought it.

I do not buy reloading components there any more since the prices are high, and they do not carry the "match" stuff - e.g. Sierra Match King bullets. They might these days but I'm happier ordering components online.

Andrew

Like most of the Internet bulk-buy retailers, I think CTD gets stuff in sometimes that's very price competitive. I've bought some clothing and accessory gear from them. But looking at my ammo purchase log, I've never bought ammunition from them...at least not in the three-plus years I've been keeping a running record. Never been in the physical store.

Some of their AR accessories in the retail are priced lower than anyone else.
Scope rail that that attaches to A1/A2 carry handle was $10, for example.
M4/rail mount rear aperture sight was $24.99.

On the catalog side, they have a AR-specific soft case for $24.95, which is hard to beat.

Amusing to note:

20 rounds 9 mm 124 grain Federal Hydra-Shock - http://cheaperthandirt.com/65885-7482-287.html - $15.31

50 rounds same stuff, http://cheaperthandirt.com/AMM407-3577-287.html - $21.97

That's 2.5 times as many rounds for 1.5 times the price.

A few weeks ago the 20 round box was about $12 and the 50 round box was about $15. Wish I had bought more.
