EDC.....found

Post by surferdaddy »

So, I am a lifelong shooter and have been carrying concealed now for a while and have come to a conclusion about my EDC pistol.

I, like many others no doubt, started ccw with a single carry piece. But somewhere along the way, I began to think it was in some ways inadequate for my needs. I feel we all run through our mental scenarios; phantom dangers which test us to rise to the occasion (or default to our level of training) and save the day. However, as we move about our daily lives our perceptions of plausible threats shifts. Will our time of trial be the cinematic dark ally with one lowlife attacker or a packed theater with an mad man and an AR? One attacker or an angry mob of lawless lunatics? Am I alone or is my family with me? Day or night? Body armor? Ahh! No no no, this carry weapon is not "ideal" for this or that scenario.

As our threat perception shifts, the limitations of our defense is laid thread-bare and we, or at least I, begin to "collect" carry weapons. This gun is easy to carry, but it lacks in some ways. This gun is powerful, but it is a bit short on capacity. This gun is is both powerful and high capacity, but it is large enough that I often carry a less capable alternative.

I have had them all; j frame, lc9, xds 45, m&p 40c, 1911, all great and capable in various ways. However, as I ran the scenes in my mind, all but say the m&p had shortcomings somewhere which made me feel anxious in some manner. The m&ps only issue, its size and weight; although a compact, it is still a bit heavy and large for me to maintain a high level of discreetness.

I don't feel that my journey is unique, as I'm sure that many of you have stumbled down the same path and likely have sizable gun and holster collections as I do. I needed a gun that I would carry daily that mitigated all my concerns. When I, heaven forbid, ever pull my pistol; I don't want to have any thoughts in my mind except complete fixation on the threat. I don't need to wonder if my gun will fire, is it lubed to be reliable, will I have enough rounds, is my caliber sufficient?

I finally found my EDC as I am sure many of you have as well. I find it so interesting that so many of us have ventured down similar paths and yet arrive at so many different solutions. Our choices reveal so much about our personalities and lifestyles, I suppose this is why we are so passionate about our choice of protection.

Thusly, my choice is somewhat irrelevant, my journey was not. I have learned so much along the way. Things about the world but also things about myself.

As for my collection, they are all good guns and I'm keeping most of them simply because I enjoy them...so hands off!

You are correct in that many of us got to the collection for the same reasons you have. I actually like the drawer full of holsters and safe of guns as I feel like I have something for every type of dress and most events I will ever attend. I find comfort in the fact that I have more than 1 IWB, and pocket option for most occasions so I rarely feel like I'm compromising.

However, the journey won't end until they quit coming out with new guns and new holsters!! :fire
