Know your weapon? Gas or not to gas.
Know your weapon?
I’d like to touch base with the powers that be here and get a temperature check.
I just bought the wife and myself both keychain canisters of the triple shot 10% OC, CS and UV dye spray.
This is the 2nd batch of stuff I’ve bought. The last stuff as 2% OC without the CS and dye. A pretty big punch up from the last stuff which expired last year.
I tried explaining that she really should get sprayed at least to a minor degree (non-face shot with shower standing by for immediate detox) just so she wont panic in case she has to use it.
To some this probably sounds completely insane, but I’ve always been of the mind that if you’re going to carry and possibly use a weapon you should be very familiar with what it can do. With this kind of spray in particular (fairly potent for civilian use) I don’t want her to panic if she gets contaminated during it’s deployment.
For those of you who have been gassed you probably understand what I’m talking about. There’s often a sort of panic that sets in right after the gas has really had a chance to soak in. I know when I was first gassed I was honestly content to never open my eyes again because it burned so much.
Now I don’t WANT to spray her, which is why I want to minimize it and have immediate detox standing by, but I also don’t want her to accidentally get gassed herself and go into a panic and not be able to function (or get away from an attacker) because she’s overwhelmed.
Is anyone following me here? Do you think it’s unreasonable to know what it feels like to get gassed if you’re going to be carrying it?
For now she's refusing (and i cant say i really blame her), but i'd like to know what you folks think of the concept. She thinks i'm nuts. She'd rather not carry at all.

I really feel that there is a difference between using chemical agents for compliance and to save your life.
OC that is carried for duty purposes and used a majority of the time to force compliance of an order...one should know what it feels like so they will not use it without completely understanding the consequences.
That said, we carry guns with the full intention of never getting shot!
and would think it a bit strange if someone offered to do us the favor.
In short, I do not think that your wife needs to be sprayed with OC. I do believe that you should buy a can and let her spray it at the back fence so she understands the distance and stream pattern.
If you just need to feel the burn....I will come over and spray you and let her watch! LOL. I will even bring the party favors.

I carry OC and it has been over 20 years since I was sprayed and I AM NOT going to lets someone spray me because I forgot what it felt like. I carry a gun and have never been shot and I don't intend to find out what it feels like. I carried a night stick and did not let anyone BEAT me with it so I would know. I have to agree with Jbirds on this one -

Let her put up a silouete & spray it at different distances & w/ a different wind direction. We did when Mom & Wife started carrying it.
When the canister is out of date practice w/ it.
If you want to know how it feels spray a TINY amt on your hand letting it get between your fingers.
Intentionally cant possibly sting any worse than accidently.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Do not spray her!
"You don't need to jump off a cliff to know you'll get hurt".
Just be as careful as possible when using OC...to not cross contaminate.
As JB suggested, let her use (the exact spray) that she will carry and practice dispensing it. Be mindful of wind direction.

We know it works if L.E. carries it. They go through extensive trials with ANY lethal and non-lethal defensive weapons before they are put into the hands of officers for obvious liability reasons.
If I did that, EVEN WITH PERMISSION, I would never hear the end of it. Think long and hard about "changing her mind".......you may end up with Bengay in your undies one of these days so she can see how you react.

I have been gassed but never sprayed with OC. Gas is not fun at all, but not unbearable. If OC is that much worse then she is right, you are nuts!KRM45 wrote:I've been gassed and sprayed. Given the choice I would gladly take the gas chamber... OC is no fun.
I agree with the above posters about practice... She'll probably get some exposure during practice and that will be enough...

ha! :)
I really couldn't ever bring myself to spray her, no matter how bad her cooking is. That stuff is ... well unpleasant just doesn't cover it.
practice is a good idea. honestly didn't think of that and i'm sure she will get some incidental contact there. I really just want her to be aware of exactly how potent the stuff is.
hell, if nothing else, i may let her spray me and just give her a big old hug :) I'll see if I can get her to douse my nachos while she's at it.
