SmithWesson M&P SemiAutos
What say ye, yea or nay to these newcomers that seem overall to be getting a pretty good reception despite some problems. The price is right. But what about the gun?
Only held & shot one. Not interested in one on my shelf.
Fit was real loose & still had some FTF. Accuracy was OK at PD range but ran a good 12" circle at 25yds, best I remember.
Price is right & if you get a reliable one go for it.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

+1 on that.AV8R wrote:I'm not going to spend money to be a beta tester for some manufacturer's new design.
I found out the hard way with a Kahr P9 . . . from now on, I will not buy a new model firearm until it's been on the market for 4 or 5 years and gets good consistently good writeups in this and other forums.

My Noobie bought one...He researched it pretty good, and kept some other manufacturers in mind for any future purchases...
Shoots pretty good...He bought the .40...
The only boger-boo I found with this particular handgun is the slide release is a bit twitchy, and will fall on the slightest touch or knock on the pistol...
The slide release lever doesn't engage the slide notch very well to allow a more positive control on that part of the reloading cycle...The slide just falls on just the insertion of the magazine...
I thought it could be fixed either by us, or a gunsmith, but the S&W folks said send it in and they'll fix it no charge...Apparently this is a wider issue than just one pistol...
I think once that is fixed, it'll make a very good defensive firearm...
The finish is a very tough one...One of the Bailey's House of Guns (South Central Houston gunrange/shop) guys took a display model and banged a heavy stapler on the counter on one of these
...No marrs or scratches...
But I guess I am not to effected by a scratched up pistol tto much I suppose...Still, a neat demo there...
Another pistol thats going to have to have the holster market catch up to fit those who wish to carry one...
I give it a 7 out of 10 overall...Gets some good concealment holsters for this rig, and I'd bump it up to a solid 8 for carry purposes...

I have seen some amazing performances come out of a S&W M&P. I have seen people switch to the gun from Glock and Sig and pass me up in the scores as a result! (Not to say this is a world class achievement, but people at my skill level) Same person shooting....improvement in the equipment often makes the difference.
I hear of problems with the guns a lot more than I see the problems in real life and I see people shooting them quite a bit
Don't tell Steve, but if I did not have so much invested in Glock accessories.....I would strongly consider picking one up to hang out with my 17.

I believe you can get just about anything Comp-tac to fit the gun...what else do ya need? Picky picky pickystevie_d_64 wrote:I give it a 7 out of 10 overall...Gets some good concealment holsters for this rig, and I'd bump it up to a solid 8 for carry purposes...

Most of the bad reports I have heard on the M&P have been of the "friend of a friend" kind.
I have 30,000 rounds through my 9mm, 9,000 rounds through my .40 and am working on 3000 rounds through my .45. Donna has 25,000 through her 9mm and 8,000 through her .40. I know of multiple professional shooters that have switched to the M&P and between PSC and Thunder we have at least 10 shooters that regularly compete with them. I have not seen one with a serious problem.
Accuracy is excellent. I can keep 20 round groups into <6 inches at 25 yards all day.
Smith and Wesson did a great job of designing and producing this pistol. If anyone is interested in trying one out, let me know.
Regarding Holsters - Comp-tac makes all their holsters for the M&P

But I only shot a friends M&P...I liked it...
And I forgot CompTac sells some holsters for that rig...Muh bad...
I'm just glad CompTac is a hop skip and jump from our digs down here...Easy to fix yourself up for just about anything...
I need to get my n00b to get one of these...I think he'll like the "Infidel" rig...
I know "SRVA" (Stevie-V) shoots one of these...My only question is have you had an issue with that slide release lever being a bit sensitive or fall on its own on one of yours...
If not, this may just be a fluke then...
I don't own one, so it hasn't been a real burn for me to solve the issue for my friends pistol...I just occasionally add what my experience has been with them...
Overall, sure, its a fine pistol...I'd buy one if I need yet another skillet upside my skull...

Stevie, Regarding the slide release, mine will fall if I insert the magazine sharply but I have no problem normally.
Donna depends on hers to fall when the magazine is inserted.
I have seen "auto slide fall" on Glocks, 1911s, Steyrs and M&Ps. As long as you follow rules two and three, it is not a problem.
The M&P is not a Steyr clone, It has a couple of features similar to the Glock, 1911, Steyr, and HK but the lock work is unique to the gun. It is very different internally from the Steyr.

I have an M&P9c. 100 rounds down the pipe with any problems. Shoots well. Easy to conceal in my CTAC. I need to put more rounds down range with it but it is a solid performer. Not being a follower of all things plastic, I love the weapon. It is my vehicle gun when I don't carry it as it is extremely durable.
Fine weapon at a low price. It is not a pride and joy weapon but it is very functional. It is the plowhorse of my sidearms with the 1911 being the thoroughbred and the S&W642 being the quarter horse.
