Has anyone applied for a Florida CCW while waiting 4 TX CHL?

Post by buddyhotrod »

Perhaps this will be a first.

I have submitted everything for my Texas CHL but seems DPS is really dragging their feet and that's fine except for when reading and am seeing others who have prior DRUG CONVICTIONS getting their CHL in a week or less.
So I was thinking that being a pilot and having military back ground and ZERO drug convictions that my CHL would be arriving sooner than people who had never served in the military and Do have prior drug convictions,I must say as a disabled combat vet i'm a little let down. If my memory is correct I think it has been 15 years since I have even had a traffic citation. So I'm thinking about just going ahead and submitting everything into Florida for the Non resident CCW. I don't mind not being able to carry 1000ft from a school and I never buy firearms online.
Could someone who has a Florida CCW please chime in?

Would like to know If the CHL class proficiency course certificate of training will work for the Florida CCW, also any other info would be appreciated.
Be kind and rewind.

How long has it been since you applied? It was my understanding that people with spotless records were getting their licenses fairly quickly. Where did you hear that people with drug convictions were getting licenses? That would depend on the charge, and how long ago it was.

Sorry, can't help with Florida info.

By the way, the license doesn't help with online gun purchases, it just allows the local FFLS that receives the gun from having to call it in. All the regular paperwork must still be done.

I used my NC class certificate to apply for my FL permit many years ago. The NC class is substantially similar to the TX class.
I believe (you'll need to verify HERE) that a copy of your TX CHL-100 is currently sufficient for a FL non-resident license.

Just to add another option.... I plan to move to an Arizona permit on my next FL renewal.
Much less cost (FL = $112, AZ = $60). Similar requirements. Similar reciprocity ( I believe FL doesn't get you WI and AZ does.)
Actually, proof of honorable discharge is sufficient "training" for AZ, I believe.

I'd still suggest a secondary non-resident CHL as a backup, but wait a 9-12 months to stagger your renewal dates.

If there is a delay in renewing your TX license, you can still carry on your backup. Also, just last week I couldn't find my wallet so I slipped my passport and UT non-resident license into my pocket and carried anyway. (Found my wallet after I got back home and had more time to look.)

I submitted a request package thru AZ DPS, received it in about a week.... took the fingerprint card to local sheriff station..... (do not fill it out before hand if they use electronic fingerprinting).. submitted CHL-100 for proficiency requirement along with copies of DD214 and color copy of DL and received Non-Resident licence in about a month.... payment was by cashier check

How old can the CHL-100 be?

When I applied for my FL license, they accepted my NC course certificate that was about 4-5 years old at the time.
This was 10+ years ago, so, you might give them a call and ask.

It's silly to me that a copy of a current CHL is not sufficient for FL or any other state that does not require a specific state mandated training... like UT or TX.

I believe Arizona accepts a copy of your Texas CHL as proof of training - but you would need to call them to be sure.

ETA: •complete a firearms safety training program pursuant to ARS §13-3112.N.
N. An applicant shall demonstrate competence with a firearm through any of the following:
6. A valid current or expired concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state and that has a training or testing requirement for initial issuance.

I believe Texas qualifies under this rule.
